Growing Ficus Carica From seed?

Post by canadianplant » Wed Feb 01, 2012 5:42 am

I am finding some interesting information about propagating this species of fig. OF couse, most gardeners know that figs require a sepcific pollinator wasp to pollinate, therefore produce seed.

My problem, is that im finding conflicting information in regards to F Carica. Ive found some sources stating that they can be grow fom seed, even from dried figs, and are SELF POLLINATING AND DONT REQUIRE THE SPECIFIC WASP. This defies everything I thought I knew about figs. There is also information stating that the seed is not viable (or really low viability), and that they actually do need the wasp. THere is also soem splaces where it has become naturalized, which implies that it is either self fertile to some extent, or the pollinating wasp has followed the tree in cultivation.

Does anyone have a solid answer?
