Look At These Forecast Lows 1-12/1-13!!! And we're crazy?

Post by Estiva » Fri Jan 12, 2007 1:07 pm

These are forecasted lows tonight for selected cities in the Southwestern US. All of these cities have mature palms, mostly Washingtonia Filiferas and Robustas, but some also have less-hardy species. This should give all of us a little more confidence (source The Weather Channel):

Lancaster, CA 11F
Palmdale, CA 13F
Victorville, CA 14F
Barstow, CA 16F
Saint George, UT 18F
Fresno, CA 20F
Sacramento, CA 22F
Bakersfield, CA 23F

MILWAUKEE, WI 25F

San Bernardino, CA 26F
Las Vegas, NV 27F (High Tomorrow 39F)
Las Angeles, CA 33F

You know what those people have no clue how to predict the weather. Its been in the 40-'s and 50's here for 2 months now. They keep predicting lows in the 20's every three days away. And those 20's have never come to pass. Last week msn said today would be -6 for lows lol. Thats impossible what are they smoking?

Forecast temps

Post by Estiva » Fri Jan 12, 2007 1:47 pm

The Weather Channel seems to be pretty accurate--it's a pretty big story in those locations. If it's 33F at LAX, it can't be more than 35F-36F at the beach, since LAX is just inland. WOW.

Also, there's someone in the Chicago area who's selling a big Trachy:

Item Title PayPal Bids Price* Shipping
to 53024, USA Time Left
Trachycarpus fortunei - Chinese windmill palm 8ft
**Local pick up only** Chicago
$349.99
Not specified 3h 02m

Huge cold air mass

Post by Barrie » Fri Jan 12, 2007 8:15 pm

Two thirds of the continental US is in the grip of a huge cold air mass, encompassing most of the west . Sooner or later that air mass will move eastward. Whether it stays away from the SE or deflects up the eastern seaboard is anyones guess. I think in all likelyhood it will avoid the majority of the SE. Luck has certainly been on their side this season.

Below Zero! Yesterday I had -7.1F and today we had -8.3F We will see what effect it has on things. Becuase the way winter was going I thought we would have made it without dipping below the Zero :x

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Those are some crazy cold temps! Here, our worst cold came suddenly at the end of November, 19.6f (-6.9c) one night.
The latest cold wave hasn't been quite as bad, 23f (-5c) overnight Jan.11 and 26.4f (-3.1c) overnight Jan 12. I know other areas around have had much colder readings. The Fraser Valley and around Bellingham and Whatcom county had temps around 10f - 12f !!!

No more zone 8 winter for us

Post by yuccaman » Sat Jan 13, 2007 10:52 am

They are calling for a cold night of -20C but before that we are getting 5-10 cm of snow from a winter
storm that effected oklahoma and other states with ice.

I don't like when we get snow and it turns extremly cold on the next sunny day.
I heard El nino is starting to fade soon.

My temps seem much colder than everyone else :(
When have palms in zone 5 you got to watch out
and protect.

Nucci60-

The only mature palms in the Milwaukee area are at "The Domes" downtown (enclosed arboretum). I just put in Milwaukee because it's my metro area and I wanted to compare it to the usually warm Southwest.

I hope the temps start coming back up, today was our third day of below 0 F. Feels ok during the day in the sun, but as soon as the sun goes down temps drop off fast. :(

I can't wait to see what lives :D

We're still holding on to our 7b winter (6F low last month)--tonight's low down to only 25F; tomorrow a little chillier to 15F. My covered T. Fortunei at a balmy 54F with the help of a 60w bulb.

For a change, the eastern 1/2 of the Midwest seems to be immune from the coldwaves. The next two weeks are historically the coldest for us. After that it's all downhill!! (I hope I'm not jinxing us!)

temp

Post by macario » Sun Jan 14, 2007 9:40 pm

Ditto here estiva. Its just raining right now and its 40 degree outside. The lowest it has got this year was about 9-10 degrees back those few days in Dec. Tomorrow its supposed to be 34. Few more weeks and we are out of the woods. Did you notice days are slightly getting longer? Estiva hows did the light bulb work for you so far this winter? I have 3 halogens in my tent with no heat and they are doing the job so far.

I have one T. Takil and one smaller T Fortunei I am overwintering using supplemental heat.

They are both going through their 2nd winter in the ground. Last winter, we had a minimum low of -16F. I had low-wattage (40w and 25w respectively) bulbs that would turn on at dusk, and then back on at dawn; reasononing was that any sun during the day would do the trick.

Both plants defoliated--in fact I really though the Fortunei was dead, but both shot up a new spear in May.

This year, I'm upping the wattage on the smaller Fortunei to 60w (keeping it on continously unless we have all-day sun), and for the larger Takil, I have a micro space heater thermostatically controlled from 35F to 45F. Some days the low never gets to 35F so the heater doesn't even come on.

My goal is for them to keep most if not all their leaves so they won't be playing "catchup" in the summer.

As we speak, the outside temperature is 23F and the inside temp for the Fortunei with the bulb is 60.3F (both using wiress sensors).

I use a very low tech, semi-clear containers (you can get these at Target, etc.), wrapped in bubble wrap and then covered with 1mil sheeting material. Then I cover the edges with mulch (and now snow). They are cheap, reusable and work great. You have no worry about drying winds.

For keeping up the humidity, I also supplement with an open container of water. To help with the heating, and to moderate the temperature, I spray-painted black 1-gallon milk jugs (higher heat absorption).

It sounds like a lot of bother, but it really hasn't been, and I can reuse the containers until they outgrow them. That will be a good problem to have.

This Spring I think I'm going for the big 15 gal. Trachy, although that will entail building a structure.

If you havn't already, sprinkle the crown with a copper-based fungicide, once now and then at least once again around late Feb/early March. This should prevent spear rot, many times the ultimate winter killer. Good luck.

By the way, when I said it doen't get down to 35F, that's the temperature inside the structure. And, the milk jugs have water in them with their caps filled about 80%.

Estiva use the copper sparingly. Copper can cause more damage if you use too much.

Laaz--Thanks for the tip, I did not know that.

Palmetto Man--I will as soon as I can get some pics. These are small-they were both 3-gal, and last winter they totally defoliated, so they're not real imprssive. My Takil has about seven leaves incuding the spear, my Fortunei, one.

Desert--It's not too uncommon for us not to get below 0 for the season, although we've only been to 6F so far, there's a ways to go.
