Season end deals!

Post by sashaeffer » Sat Nov 05, 2011 3:42 am

I can't pass a Lowe's or Home Depot now without checking out the tropical dept and seeing if there are anything new or good deals and have discovered that most of the box stores are now getting in their Christmas plants, Norfolk Pines, and what they call "Holiday Tropicals"(Majesty palms with glitter)

Anyway to make room, have seen prices slashed on what they have had left over and bought yet another Pygmy Date Palm for $5 and a new palm for the collection a Spindle palm for $9. All of the Spindles actually had 3 palms per 3 gallon pot so will separate when it is healthier.

Also, friend of mine who works at one of the Lowe's here said they are going to be closing some locations around the country due to the economy, so might see some further clearance stuff to get rid of. I would assume after Christmas. Sad to hear about really.

My local HD hasn't done the major price slashing you're seeing.
A couple of years ago, they into winter with scores of palms still outside and of course they all died. They'd have been better off giving me a truck load of Chammies in exchange for my labor hauling them off in November....

My best autumn palm shopping was in Texas. They have a much better selection down there! No trips planned until winter, however.

Wow great prices, especially for a PDP and Spindle.
I've resisted buying a Majesty, but it IS tempting every year.
They'd have been better off giving me a truck load of Chammies in exchange for my labor hauling them off in November....
Agree, Erik.

As to slashed prices, it's often a case of just being in the right place at the right time.

a good thing:
can't pass a Lowe's or Home Depot now without checking out the tropical dept

No deals up here in Mass. I'm still waiting to find some trimming Yuccas for sale at HD or Lowes.

I'll be checking the box stores over the next week or so. Today, I bought a fairly large C. revoluta from an individual for $49!

Even MORE deals......

Post by sashaeffer » Mon Nov 14, 2011 10:16 am

Went back to the same Lowe's that I bought the trio(in same pot) spindle palm for $9 and PDP for $5.

Now they had them marked down even further to just $2! each!! so drug home two more PDP's and Spindle palm(again 3 in one pot)

Easy $6 spent!

Two bucks?
Heck, I'd sleep in the parking lot waiting for them to open if my box store did that...

Yes, it's the only Lowe's in my area that has had any clearance tropicals. All the rest still have them at full price. I will leave the trio of Spindle palms together in this pot I'm thinking as long as there wouldn't be a issue doing that??

Barb? is that ok to do with these? or should I separate them when plant is healthier?

Scott

Barb, do you have a spare space for increasing "palm population" in you house?

I used to have space...until I germinated a box of Foxtail (Wodyetia) seeds that are now in 2 gallon pots.
One day I'll count all the plants.

Difficult to pass up a Box Store palm at a deep discount price, though.
Especially when you know you can "save it" from a lingering death under the Box Store's "care".

Here are two pics of my recent purchases.

The first one shows the caudex size of the C. revoluta (with a pop can for scale  ):

The next pic is showing the $6 B. recurvata. There are actually 3 caudexes in here, but I don't think they can be separated yet:

Scott very nice price for the palms you bought. Spindle palms are easy to grow overwintering inside. Cameron that is a beautiful huge Cycad for the price and quality. The seller has a green thumb. It is amazing how quickly you can accumulate plants at rock bottom prices.
