Has anyone seen pawpaw growing wild in Niagara? (Asimina tri
I have been growing pawpaw trees (Asimina triloba) for about 6 years now, and propagating them for three years.
Has anyone seen a wild tree or grove of pawpaws growing in the Niagara area or anywhere in Ontario? I would love to have a photo of a local large specimen.
I have found a small grove alongside a road in someone's backyard in Virgil, ON. After I stopped to chat with the owners of the property, they were more than happy to give me a fruit or two. Their trees may or may not be wild, since they have been there for more than 25 years and were either already naturally there, or planted by the previous owners. As well their trees are a mixed mangled mess. They are shaded by conifers and sunblocked by other tree species. Their fruit is small, likely to to the restricted sun. PM me if you wish to know the address of these trees.
So my search continues. Anyone else see wild pawpaws in Niagara or Ontario?

Adam - Have you tried getting in touch with the MNR or ontario forestry devision to see if they know of any?

Good idea I know they know some are within boundaries of shorthills park in st catharines, but I always imagined they would not want everyone to know specific locations, sine some may try to steal them or their fruit... does not hurt to ask
and I have to take a photo of the whole tree cuz it has been a few yearssince I have

I tried to find some info but I couldnt find anything. If the MNR fails, the best thing to do is try to find some habitat for it. Look for the proper plant associations and communitites listed here:
http://www.fs.fed.us/database/feis/plan ... i/all.html
ECOSYSTEMS :
FRES13 Loblolly - shortleaf pine
FRES14 Oak - pine
FRES15 Oak - hickory
FRES16 Oak - gum - cypress
FRES17 Elm - ash - cottonwood
FRES18 Maple - beech - birch
KUCHLER PLANT ASSOCIATIONS :
K089 Black Belt
K098 Northern floodplain forest
K100 Oak - hickory forest
K101 Elm - ash forest
K102 Beech - maple forest
K103 Mixed mesophytic forest
K104 Appalachian oak forest
K111 Oak - hickory - pine forest
K112 Southern mixed forest
K113 Southern floodplain forest
SAF COVER TYPES :
25 Sugar maple - beech - yellow birch
26 Sugar maple - basswood
27 Sugar maple
28 Black cherry - maple
39 Black ash - American elm - red maple
42 Bur oak
52 White oak - black oak - northern red oak
53 White oak
55 Northern red oak
57 Yellow-poplar
58 Yellow-poplar - eastern hemlock
59 Yellow-poplar - white oak - northern red oak
60 Beech - sugar maple
61 River birch - sycamore
62 Silver maple - American elm
64 Sassafras - persimmon
65 Pin oak - sweetgum
76 Shortleaf pine - oak
78 Virginia pine - oak
82 Loblolly pine - hardwood
87 Sweetgum - yellow-poplar
91 Swamp chestnut oak - cherrybark oak
92 Sweetgum - willow oak
93 Sugarberry - American elm - green ash
94 Sycamore - sweetgum - American elm
108 Red maple
I do believe they love low lying flood plains and rivers. THere is also this:
OTHER MANAGEMENT CONSIDERATIONS :
Pawpaw is not valued for silvicuture. Sites that have been clearcut may
need to be treated to suppress pawpaw, since it may outcompete valued
timber species [13]. "
SITE CHARACTERISTICS :
Pawpaw is found in deciduous forests, on slopes of ravines, along
streams, and floodplains. Soils on which it occurs are usually deep,
rich, damp, sandy, or clayey [15,28,36].
Common tree associates include blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica), Ohio buckeye
(Aesculus glabra), honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthus), and coffee tree
(Gymnocladus dioica) [3,9].
IT seems that they should have a larger population on low land, that has been clear cut at one point. IT seems that they associate with nitrogen fixers in the early stages of succession after forest fires or disturbance (locust and and "coffee tree").
This should help point you to the right direction.

Pawpaw full tree photo. Both one on left and tiny one on right are seven years old but are definitely performing very differently.
tall one is 8 ft tall
