Anyone have Queen Palm for indoor plant?

Post by sashaeffer » Sat Oct 22, 2011 10:18 am

Found some nice looking Queen Palms here, but from what I've read and found on the net I get the impression that they don't like being indoors.

Just curious if anyone here in the forums has Queen palms that they keep indoors, at the very least when they over winter them or all year.

Hate to spend the money if it's not going to do well.

A fellow named Mark had some huge ones indoors over winter.
He dragged the pots outdoors around the pool in summer.
Haven't seen him on the site for some time.
I think he had as much trouble with soft-bodied scale on palms during winter as I did.

The worst palm to keep healthy indoors seems to be the Majesty palms.
I've resisted buying one, yet 7 footers are really cheap in the box stores

Sashaeffer. Here is a Queen palm I`ve had in a pot for 4 years. I gradually moved into larger pots every two years. It is already over 11 ft. with pot. It goes in my "palm"garage every winter and doesn`t skip a beat all winter. The temps stay around the 45f to 55f during the winter in the garage. These palms are low maintenance. I would keep them away from any forced air furnace vents. Dry air kills. Desert palms are much easier to over winter indoors that tropicals IMO.

Beautiful Palm John!!

I wished mine had more "trunk" like yours and others I've seen. I have a shorter truck(double for some reason) and BIG top growth. Plan on getting it outside today long enough to repot. Currently it's still in it's small plastic nursery pot.

Will post pics later..

Great looking Queen palms. Have you thought of separating the two of them?

Funny you should ask....just a little while ago I was in the middle of transplanting it and when I pulled it out of the pot it came it it fell apart into two separate palms. Each having it's own "information" tag from Monrovia, so it turned out I got quite a deal!

Great two for one deal. They should do better separated IMO. In a way I`m kinda glad we don`t get deals like you did. I couldn`t resist even though I`ve got to many now.

I feel like saying if those are both Queens I'll eat my hat...
Good they separated like that...sometimes the process kills both plants so I've been reluctant.

Fabulous two-for-one deal.
Have you thought of separating the two of them
John, re the big Foxtails you and I each have...have you separated your triples?
I've wanted to, but never dared even when repotting.

Scott great job separating those two. It will be better for them both down the road. Maybe try some root hormone just to give them a little boost. You should be able to find some at your local garden supply store. A good description of Queen palms on a website selling them. http://realpalmtrees.com/palm-tree-stor ... -tree.html. We have zone 8b to 9a on our British Columbia coast. I`m surprised I haven`t heard of anyone planting these on the B.C. coast with rain protection during winter.

Barb I didn`t want to separate the three foxtails that were in the three gal. pot you dropped off for me last Nov. They are so interwoven with roots that I passed on risking any of them. They got transplanted into 4 gal. pots this spring and are doing great!

When I separated the two and put into individual pots I gave them a light watering with Superthrive and Epsom Salts. One of the two had a more expansive root system than the other, and weren't intertwined with each other at all.

I suspect since all of the Queen palms where "doubles" at the nursery, that Monrovia must have put two seeds in each container not knowing if either would germinate. Glad I had two pots and enough palm mix dirt on hand to plant them both.

Me too, John. When I up-potted the 3 big foxtails this spring, I gently tugged on each to see if there was a chance of separating them.
Not a hope so I kept them as a threesome.
must have put two seeds in each container
Their roots would've been so intertwined they wouldn't have fallen apart when repotting.
The nursery was just minimizing pots by doubling up for sale.
must have put two seeds in each container
You'll soon acquire so much "stuff", you'll need a shed to store it all.
My many many pots/soil/etc. are stored in 3 places...basement, shop, old root cellar.
I even keep old plastic buckets which come in handy as pots.

Barb,

It's partially the reason why we erected a green house this fall! lol PLUS since were empty nesters now I have two bedrooms that I can use, but as of right now only allowed one to over winter some banana's in. All my potted palms will go in 3rd car garage for the winter. I have 12 can lights in the garage with "Daylight" spectrum flood lights so will leave them on during the day. The garage never drops below freezing so they should be ok to over winter there.

We've been having such a mild fall, all potted palms are still outside and throwing new frond like crazy.

Your trachies will love the nice Fall weather you're having.

Isn't it wonderful being an empty nester? Us too!
All those rooms that can (eventually) be filled with palms for winter :blob4:
Your garage sounds ideal...and you can always move 2 cars OUTSIDE (sound familiar, John)?

I'm lucky I have a large garage, so can still keep a couple cars in there and plenty of room for cold hardy tropicals.

ALL of my utility bills have dropped since kids moved out(especially daughter) so can better afford any extra heating I need to do with keeping outside tropicals warm and happy. I also have 3 ponds that I keep running and heated throughout the winter, so I'm sure the utility company loves me!

May have to put the brakes on buying anymore palms though, getting "what now" looks from the wife when something catches my eye at the nursery.

Scott,
have a large garage, so can still keep a couple cars in there and plenty of room for cold hardy tropicals.
I move my tropical palms into the garage for about a month before they come inside.
Car exhaust doesn't do them any good though, so I leave the big door open for a while after cars go in/out.
If you're leaving plants in there all winter because you have the space, in the cold months when you're more likely to let a car run to warm up, I'd move car outside for the warm-up minute.
so I'm sure the utility company loves me!

Here in BC Canada, the electric utility has begun installing "Smart Meters"
http://www.bchydro.com/energy_in_bc/pro ... martmeters
We "zone pushers" will benefit because all the Christmas lights/palm hut heaters that keep our outdoor palms warm in winter will get a lower rate during times of low usage (probably midnite to 6 am?). :P
Unless the utility increases rates overall
when something catches my eye at the nursery.
Fall/winter is "the time to buy palms because they're so cheap..."
Works every time for me!

No worries about me letting car run in garage....never happens, yet people do and end up killing themselves or their pets.
