Help w/ Medjool date

Post by Kansas » Tue Dec 19, 2006 6:58 pm

Just went to the store and found a container of Medjool dates. I peeled the fruit off and have them soaking now.
Are there any secrets other than the usual to germinating these??

I did this last year and had 3 for 3 germinate. I soaked them in water for a copule of days, planted them in individual pots, kept them warm and they germinated in 5 weeks. I'll post pictures tomorrow (wednesday) of my medjool date palms. I kept them in the sun this past summer and they grew maybe 8-10". I'd say I got good seeds, so you never know, but mine were easy. Good luck.

following is a picture of one of my medjool date palms. sprouted in 5 weeks. I palnted it is a somewhat sandy soil and provided full sun over summer (probably 8 hours of sun each day) and provided lots of water.

Heres a couple of pictures of a foxtail. This seedling germinated in Sept 2006. In this picture it is about 3 months old. S L O W.

This is a foxtail I bought off ebay in August 2006. The guy sent along 5 seeds of which 3 have germinated. see above. This palm is about 4 ft tall and is doing very well.

Good luck with your medjools.

Don't know what I did right, but I posted this thread on Dec. 19th, and looked yesterday (Dec.28th) and I had at least one popped seed. After I saw I had one, I wanted to leave it closed as fast as possible to keep the condinsation in the container and not let them dry up. So I got germination from these in 9 days INCLUDING soaking.
If any body is interested, I can write back with the brand of the company if you want.

Wes - After I saw your original post on 12/19/2006, I went out and bought 5 medjools and 2 coconuts at the local organic market and planted the stuff within just a few days. Don't have any germination yet with my medjools but hopefully soon. I don't know what I 'll do if I get 5 more date palms, but I enjoy watching them grow.
I am still taking good care of your foxtail.

Happy New Year to everybody at PalmsNorth.
