Cold Hardy Yucca

Post by Jay-Admin » Tue Oct 05, 2004 3:43 pm

What trunking Yuccas do you think would be the cold hardiest and why? I have seen some huge Yucca Elatas By Osoyoos BC without winter protection. They are actually located about a 5 min. drive down to Oriville WA. from Osoyoos.

Jay

I grow Yucca elphantipes it grows ok in 8b with protection tough years. I don't have a picture of my larger plant "4 feet", but this one has been out for over 7 years. I died to the roots the first year outside. It was a house plant that my wife made me get rid of. It was 7 feet tall when I put it out. The posted picture is about a year old, It is about 3 feet tall now. I also grow Yucca recurvifolia I have seen them 5 feet tall in my neighborhood. I understand rostrata is hardy to Z7 and can grow 15 feet tall. Of the two I grow elphantipes is faster growing but burns in the dry cold. this picture is shows the damage the spring after a hard winter.

I also have 2 Y.Elephantipes in pots outside all winter between 8a & 8B
here in Christchurch NZ.
Still drying to decide whether to plant one in open ground near the house for microclimate protection I think good drainage could be the key.

Plant it out

Post by james brascher » Wed Oct 06, 2004 2:35 pm

Remembering what you posted regarding what you grow and your climate (post is gone) I think you should have no issues, with one caveat. Keep it dry, drainage is a problem.

I have mine up against the house on a mound. I need to water it during the summer, otherwise it might dry up.

If I were you I'd plant it up. It must be getting warm enough that you can put it in the ground now and have a good growing season to get some root development.

I bought two of those a couple of months ago labeled yucca tip? They look just like the one in your pic. I wonder if that is what they are.

Thanks James.I've got my C.humilis in a built up soil spot and its thriving so will see if I can find another good sunny spot close to the house for one of the Yuccas.
Jay.Here in NZ Y. Elephantipes is sometimes sold as"Yucca tips"

Hi,

What success stories do people have? I have had good success with many sp. and woud like to talk to other people about these very cool plants :)

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Ya it's been so mild i planted one of my trachys already. Hope it wasn't too soon. :? We haven't had any bad freezes lately and it's only suppose to be around freezing this weekend. Probably only for a few hours during the nite. If it does get cold maybe i'll just throw a blanket around it for the nite. :D Here's some pics.
