Trachycarpus Nanus

Has anyone had any experience with Trachcarpus Nanus (dwarf Windmill palm)? I have read both that it is trunked--to about ten feet--and that it is untrunked.

If it is a trunking form, it would seem an easier palm to protect in the winter given its stature.

This species of trachycarpus eventually develops a trunk of only 1 to 2 feet. It is believed to be as cold hardy as fortunei and maybe more drought tolerant. I would like to give this species a try. :partyman:
It looks like a real winner for our area.

Hey Wes,

Trachcarpus Nanus looks like an awesome palm.

Have you seen any decent size ones for sale on the lower mainland?

No Jay, I haven't but I hope to see some at the PNWPEPS plant sale in May. I know Joe is growing seedlings on SSI but they are still very small.

I guess we will have to wait a few years. Keep us posted if you find any that are a decent size.

I finally planted a seedling of nanus. It doesn't have a mature frond yet but I want to try it in the ground to see how hardy it is. I have trachycarpus fortunei seedlings that survive outside all year so we will see.

I will let everyone know how it does this summer and how it does in the upcoming winter.
