Hi Damir,
nice snowy/frosty plants. Do you protect the palms in winter?
Hi Barb,
Too funny with Midas Muffler! Around here Pizza Hut's still have the original architecture from the 70's.

thanks!
usually i do wrapp the trachy and cover it with nylon. this year it wasnt too cold for it,even it has some leaf damage now. but it is important that plant dosent die. i cut all burned leaves in spring, and it recovers. cidp is first year in ground,it was wrapped all the time, till 10 days ago when temps began ti rise, and i keep it unwrapped and open now, as long as it will be good weather. if it gets worse, ill wrapp it again.

Wow! (except the photo of your foot)
Such healthy looking pine trees overhanging the beach and on the mountain slopes. Our pines aren't that lush looking.
Bougainvillea grows there, or is it potted? And those palms!
The CIDPs along the waterfront road are sooooooo beautiful, interesting pruning technique, considerably different from how Southern California pruners do it.
Their aim is a clear trunk with no hint of old leaf bases, then the "pineapple".
And the CIDPs in fruit!
Did you start your CIDP from one of those seeds on the beach?
Thanks for the great pics...and shoe size 11

i didn't grow mine cidp from seeds of those from dalmatia. i bought mine in one nursery, for about 5 dolars. it was damaged a lot but central spear was green and healthy, and i took it. regular price was about 40 bucks, but because it was damaged there was a discount.
dalmatia have mediteranean climate, so lot of exotics grow there. palms,olives,lemons,orange,agave,cactus,grapes....
we have very good vines

damir,
Ah...to be able to grow bougainvillea, olives, lemons and CIDP outdoors is a wonderful dream!
Once again thanks for great links, fabulous Mediterranean climate and those pictures of limestone bluffs at 20-34 degree slopes!
The 2nd and 5th pictures remind me of similar steep vineyards we saw many years ago during a boat trip down the Rhine in Germany.
Photos make me want to get out of here...permanently.

PS--Cameron is going to post some de-lidding pictures in his Germination post.
So that we know which end of which seed to de-lid.
Trachies/chamaerops are somewhere near the middle (I found out), so we will need any successful de-lidding pictures added to his post.

Quite different from now I suppose.damir wrote:sidpook wrote:Thanks for the great pics Damir...I was in Zagreb once, loved it,...Never to the coast!

Good job, Damir! What was your lowest temp this winter?
<img src="http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/ ... /71601.gif" alt="Click for Shearwater, Nova Scotia Forecast" border="0" height="60" width="468" />
lowest temp was -13 C. lot of days around -10C, and few weeks temp was not above 0C. here is problem in europe that we have wet winers. if the palm roots are dry in winter than it can survive much lower temps than it says for every specie. also long period of time temps do not rise above zero C.
from mine experience , very important is that center of the palm does not get wet in winter,so you will not have spear pulling in spring. my cidp was in some kind of cage, made from old windows with double glasses. also i put nylon at the ground inside the cage so there is no evaporation from the ground. then i wrapped the palm in many lays of fabrics. on that i put one smaller wood box and all of that was inside the glass box made of windows.
trachy wasnt covered. so now i had spear pulled from both of them. i washed it, the hole inside the palm and water it with mix of water and fungicide, antracol,so it recovers. this i did and last year and it recovers. here are some pics what i did.

Hi Damir,
Great pics! That's good to see that the needle palm is germinating for you! Unfortunately, the seeds never arrived.

Damir,
great photos and description, thanks.
Congrats on the Hystrix germination!
I think Trachies need to be near a building for protection.
Mine didn't do well here even in summer when exposed to hot weather and drying winds.
Does much better now 4 feet from the East wall of house.
Good luck with fungicide results.

finally spring is here. i planted some new things, pics soon. opuntias are ready to flower... cold hardy agave planted outdoor, some new seedlings like trachy bulgaria (hardiest trachy there is), some yuccas, mostly aloifolia.
my fruits are growing, kiwi, mini kiwi actinidia arguta , it is cold hardy to -30C, all you that live in cooler climates should get some of this one. also siberian lemon, poncirus trifoliata, cold hardy to -20C.

here is a pic of my broken joshua tree. neighbour's kids were playing around it when i planted it in the ground one month ago,and..... i took hormone for roots in hope that it could make new ones, the part that felt off. yesterday i was surprised when i dug it up and saw many new roots, also the part of the trunk that stayed in the ground has some new leaves. now i have two brevifolias.
)) first i was mad at the kids, but it was my mistake cause i didnt put something around it so it is visible. now i am happy.
)))
