Some of my small palms

Post by Jubaea » Tue Feb 15, 2011 10:58 pm

I only started growing palms a few years ago starting with Jubaeas and now I have actually purchased my first palm, a Majesty. Others I have collected seeds and then grown them from them. I also have dug up some palms from else where including these kings (I hope they make it).

Magesty Palm. I guess I will find out whether or not this can make it here. I have only seen a few small ones outside in warmer microclimates of town doing ok. For $14 I think I can risk it.

I dug these King palms last week from a neighbors yard. There are hundreds of themp popping up under the parent palms.

Others including Jubaes that I started in pots and others that were started in ground and put into pots. It looks like most of them are handling the trasplant ok.

I have been growing succulents and such for much longer than palms. Here are some of my nicest ones.

Great collection!
I like succulents but know next to nothing about them. Worse, my favorite local nursery sells them all as "succulents" and I don't feel confident figuring out what they are.

I also don't know much about majesty or king palms. How much cold can they take?

Jubaea,

Lovely Majesty you bought. They'll do better for you than here, as they like humidity/bright light and our Canadian winters mean they're indoors for up to six months. Does your house have a microclimate for it, say, an "L" of your house so it gets protection from two sides?

Here we are yabbering about your Majesty and look what's behind it in the picture!!!!! An orange tree.
No big deal for you Californians, but....how exciting to this Canadian! :bounce:

Nice Sagos, aloe, see an Aucuba.
What seedling palms do you have potted?

Good job transplanting the Kings...I can barely imagine hundreds of seedlings growing under the parent tree.
Some of my favorite work is transplanting...to find such treasures next door would be heaven!

Absolutely love your succulent display, wonderful selection including Stonecrop? Lithops? Echeveria, Jade.
Is that a Euro fan palm in the middle?

Since I know Jubaea palms are your favorite, are you planning to start some from seeds?
Thanks for the pics!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Erik,

Succulents are super easy to grow. There are many differnent varieties and most are easy to propagate, so it is no necessary to know what they are to grow them. As for the cold hardiness of the Kings they should take upper 20's ok as the parent palms are growing in full sun now with no protection to the crowns. The seedings are in a protected area. I'm not sure about the Magjesty so I will find out. It got down to 33 the day after i got it. I was hoping I would not find out untill next winter.

Barb,

I do have a protected area for palms if I can convince my parents to let me plant it there. That is one reason why I have so many potted plants. I have mostly Jubaeas that I have grown from seed. I think I may have a W. filifera, and a Butia. I also have seeding Sagos that i grew from our large female plant. As for the succulents I have lots of Aeoniums, some Aloes, Differnt types of Jade, Agaves, Dracaena draco (grown from seed), Echeveria and then many unknown ones.

They'll be thrilled to have a landscaper on premises! :D

You're into a wonderful lifetime hobby. :salute:

That majesty should be fine. California will likely not repeat that cold spell for 40 years.

More pics anytime...
