Post by TimMAz6 » Sun Jan 23, 2011 7:38 pm

Palm hut is still in one piece.....the snow load is placing a strain on the steel tubing LOL.

Monkey puzzle tree protected too.
<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... 11320b.jpg>

We have a cold blast coming so I placed a 40 watt bulb next to my T. takil yesterday.
<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... 111258.jpg>

I also placed my seed germination heating pad around my Wollemi pine yesterday.
<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... 11258b.jpg>

My 7 gal Sabal birmingham is still green.....the min/max thermometer in the greenhouse had a low of 12F.
<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... 11258a.jpg>

Any chance they won't get fried tonight.......forecast low of -6F with a high tomorrow of 10F. I hope it's sunny tomorrow.

That Sabal looks super!

I know the snow must be annoying, but I bet it has kept your soil from getting overly cold. We are in a drought here so very little snow--not enough to help.

Tim, thanks for the great pic update.
Hope that frame holds up...would removing a bit of snow allow the frame to flex back up a bit?

Ouch...the Wollemi saw 12F too BEFORE the hot mat was added? You're a brave man, Tim!

Fabulous takil, great size, nice Sabal.

I'd be out there adding blankets and sleeping bags under the plastic for another layer.
Your wife's probably hidden them... :laughing1:

Fingers crossed...

Hi Everyone,

snow is keeping the ground warmer so I like it this time of year.

I usually do take snow off the roof of the greenhouse but since we are getting a cold spell I didn't remove it......more insulation! I'll remove it tomorrow. The Wollemi is seeing a good test. I've hit 12F 2x in the grenhouse so far this winter......but temps typically bounce up to 40F+ during the day which should be beneficial. The Wollemi should be a solid zone 8a/b plant....hopefully....there are a few in Wash DC that have been outside for several years now. Sabal birmingham should be fine......only concern is it's seeing its first winter here so roots aren't established.

I haven't seen Wollemis survive any true zone 7 temps yet (0-5F). What's the coldest you've heard them survive? I had a smaller one in 2008 and it died from our cold.....low of -2F or so. I'm hoping they get hardier with size.

The coldest spot I've heard them survive is Wash DC (Smithsonian)....but that's really a zone 8a climate.

...and then it's duration of cold that makes a difference, you obviously don't get a month of it at a time.

It's encouraging to hear of those Wollemis that have survived outdoors unprotected.

Will be wonderful to see all the protection pulled off late winter.
Are we there yet? :lol: :lol:

I always feel better come Feb 1 even though there are a few more weeks of cold. Super cold is usually over Mid March in our area.

that is march here or end of feb on a good year. The temps take the big jump towards spring. We have a good 2 feet of snow in town ( apperantly o ver 6 feet in some areas just out of town), which is great for the run off we miss last year ( litarealy 0 snow in town). Should be a good year to plant some trees :twisted:

6ft of snow and my greenhouse would be laying flat!

Brutal winter eh Tim?! Though your plants are looking good! Let's hope the coldest is behind us now. How's the mag looking. Probably doesn't mind the cold weather too much eh?

Tim, I give you credit for keeping those palms alive. It sure looks cold there and the temps you are talking about, I am surprised they survive.
