Old Trachy in ground 1 year
Trying to get this new photo to load...aaargh!
Will try to embed pic:
Anyway, compared to my avatar at left, it's sure taking off.
Barb
Wondering why Flickr site changed their photo process...what a pain.

Yes, that's what impressed me...it's never looked so "stretched out" before.
Finally got the hang of Flickr's new photo process (thanks for the tip, Steve, buddy!!!!), so here are the two close-ups that bombed loading yesterday.
In the following pic, the "old boots" are so close together that it never really stretched up as it grew while in the pot all those years.
Can you just imagine what it would say if it could talk?
It would sure be exciting to see some flowers...maybe next year.
The poor beggar is probably too old to flower (if you know what I mean???!!!!! ha ha)
And Erik, lots of water for a Trachy (and afternoon shade if temps regularly get 100F and above) seems to be the trick.

Thanks folks.
yes, wxman, from the end of the old boots to top is "trunk stretching" from one year's growth.
Cameron, bet you're glad you planted yours too!
A little stressful during winter but vigorous growth is sure worth it having it in the ground.
Guess we all realize we'll be getting our winter protection planned in less than TWO months...

Don't blame you at all, Erik.
You're more than 30 degrees above us today! Whew!
We'll all regret those thoughts in a couple of months.

Does not even look like the same palm. If it could talk it would be happy and mad, happy to be in the ground and mad it took so long.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Aaron,
John,
will be happy to show it to you!
Remember a bucket or bag so you can take home the nana and her pups.
It's so beat up from the wind, you'll think I'm giving you a mop

maybe 32 or 33 years is "the trick" to make it gratefulmad it took so long

Thanks, guys.
No sign of this guy slowing down either:
I've never seen it push such strong-looking and dark green fronds.

We've finally cooled down for a couple of days.
Thank goodness.
As you know Erik, if Trachies had a choice between a cool summer and a really hot one, they'd pick cool
Your palms are sure responding to the heat.
Re watering, I usually put one of those little "under-tree" sprinklers at the base and let it deep water for up to 6 hours, every couple of weeks.
Probably equivalent to 3 inches of water, I'd guess.

Looking great Barb ! Nice work!
Regarding Trachies and heat, I just got back from Vegas and most of the Trachies down there look really bad or outright dead. I don't think they enjoy three straight months of 100 plus degrees too much .

Thanks Duncan, Trachies are so easy to please...
Hope you had a good trip...maybe some pics???
What a shame their Trachies were suffering, hate to see that happen.
They should plant them where they get only morning sun.
I didn't see too many Trachies in Vegas, I suppose they plant them because it can get cold in the desert.
But Butia and Brahea would look better in their hot summers.
And Washy would love it; after all, they're naturalized in some of the desert valleys not far from Vegas.

antti, thanks very much.
Yours will grow big too!
Now a month later, no sign of slowing down:
With two new leaves pushing up, another one is coming too!
Compared to my avatar (at left), it's shot up nicely. Loves this cool rainy weather.

The color is a goof from my flash (it was near dusk)
(Wish it was BLUE)...
I regret not marking last year's last leaf, tough to figure out how many leaves this year.
