Fungicides?

Post by TerdalFarm » Sat Oct 24, 2009 6:35 am

The fungicide I have used in the past has been the copper-based soaps referred to in Francko's 2003 book. I spray the trunk and stem of my palms before I put them in leaf enclosures, and again in late winter/early Spring. I tend to use it rather generously. I have read somewhere here on this forum that copper-based fungicides can be toxic if overused, and the copper can accumulate in the soil. So, my question is, what fungicides (if any) do you use for fungal infection prevention?
I have a preference for organic treatments but I am not a fanatic. The reason is that my egg-laying hens run all through my garden eating bugs. I assume anything I put in my garden will end up in the eggs I eat.

SULFUR-can also be used, here's the low down on it's toxicity-
Sulfur is known to be of low toxicity, and poses very little if any risk to human and animal health (1, 8). Short-term studies show that sulfur is of very low acute oral toxicity and does not irritate the skin (it has been placed in EPA Toxicity Category IV, the least toxic category, for these effects). Sulfur also is not a skin sensitizer. However, it can cause some eye irritation, dermal toxicity and inhalation hazards (8).

Neem oil

Post by TerdalFarm » Sat Oct 24, 2009 7:38 pm

Thanks! I'll look for it.
I bought, on impulse, a bottle of "fungicide" spray today with the active ingredient of neem oil. Does anyone have experience with it?

tagor,
welcome!
If you would be so kind, please make a post on the "introductions" forum to tell us about yourself.
As to your question, I have no experience. I am still trying to learn about fungicides. --Erik

I'll third that Welcome. I use neem a lot on stuff, I only use copper if something is in rough shape.

What is this product for Tagor, mildew or rot?

Hi! I'm an gardener-amateur, nurse in the zone 5a with albizia, fig, pomegranate, trachycarpus and others. I'm not a big expert, but I was often approached for help. Now asked to help this palm. I know that the easiest way to use copper, but I want to save the old leaves.
Strobilurines - a broad-spectrum fungicides. Minus - phytotoxicity of some of them for individual plants and the emergence of resistant pathogens

Thanks for those pictures, Tagor (and welcome to Palms North!!!!).

I think those pics show a MANGANESE deficiency (not Magnesium), versus needing a fungicide.

Interesting about Strobilurine, discovered in '77 from a pine cone.
Had never heard of it before.

Ooops

I think Erik asked a question a while ago(back there),I have used neem oil for
scale and other little buggys.

I also used it on my Trachys when I trunk cut them-for what it's worth.

Barb,
thanks! I have had palm leaves like that and always assumed it was fungus. Might be nutrient deficiency. I guess I'm guilty of neglecting manganese as a need.
Jim,
thanks. I tried neem oil over the winter, but perhaps not enough to make a difference. All the "ballroom" plants recovered when they got outside.

Erik, agree with everybody that fungicide is a must, especially now that my Butia capitata is dead :x
But nutrient deficiencies are insidious, by the time we notice telltale signs, the affected leaves are ugly.
Thankfully they can be cut off with new flushes occurring, as long as the plant is getting the nutrients it needs.
