Plant Yourself in Google Earth

Post by sidpook » Sat May 22, 2010 6:02 pm

Anyone up for placemarking ourselves in google earth so we can "see" where we are all located? It could be fun...
Let me know....

Hi Mike,
Cool idea.
I'll need instructions...tried it once and it bombed.

Here is the photo I found on google maps. I zoomed and cropped.

The tropical-themed garden is around the pool in the backyard. I think I can even make out a couple of the larger palms (Butia; Washy in container on the "beach").

palms from the sky

Post by TerdalFarm » Sun May 23, 2010 9:40 pm

Can anyone else see their palms from the sky?
OK, I admit it takes some imagination.
But when I use the actual image on Google, I can make out shadows where I know my larger Washy, Butia and Trachy were in April, when I assume this was taken.

Erik, the fact that it's a recent (April) shot is so cool.
My area is in the boondocks and from the size of trees, etc. the satellite picture is from approx. 2004...or earlier.

Yes, I can see your larger palms!

Think I also see your Trachy's shredded leaves....

OK, OK, I get it.
I ran around and picked up the dead palm leaves lying all all over the ground.

As for the April image, yes, cool. For years, Google had a picture taken before we bought the place.
Then Bing came along and had a newer image. It showed the layout of my garden beds.
I suspect Bing is forcing Google to update their content. Hence the new photo on Google.
I predict you'll all have new images on Google soon.
So, pick up those tattered palm fronds before the whole world sees them!

Here's mine off bing I hope it works right. It is at least 3 years old though. If you could zoom in closer you could see my oldest trachy coming out of winter.

I really like how bing uses all four angles of your property too, strange the technology
we can get our hands on for free. The gov. can most likely see if you shaved if they
want to.

Pretty amazing.
I see the Caddi parked out there, before someone got into palms?

Interesting that you can narrow down to the year, month just buy
looking at the progress of a new building, house color etc.

True, and if you click a bit further away from your house and then manipulate the direction finder you may get a whole different year and season. Our pictures range from 2004 to 2007. I can actually see the exact day we were having a huge swamp maple cut out of the back yard,....

Jim,
I bought the caddy in 2004. There was one palm at least in the photo
you have to start somewhere. Since they take the pictures in spring it will most likely look like a refuge camp next time in front of my house

That's good to know about the settings mike I'll have to play around with it some more.
