Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

We get down to -25 F for 1-3 days in a row at least once per winter. We get colder temperatures to -35 F every now and then. It used to happen every 2nd winter but it hasn't been that cold in the last 5 years. We also used to get a foot of snow before xmas and have it stay for the winter and insulate root systems. We haven't had full snow cover in 4 years. Last winter I lost 50% of my perennial alyssium, 2/3 of my perennial rudebeckia and daisies as a result of the constant freeze/ thaw with no snow cover and occasional -20F.
Nurseries used to guarantee zone 2 & 3 hardy perennials/shrubs for 1 year. Last year they cut their guarantee back to 3 months.
If I can keep mulch or snow on them, I can grow most Zone 4 as well as some Zone 5 & 6 perennials and small shrubs.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

Awesome yucca but not one for my climate either. We are just to wet for it here.

Aaron those Joshuas look great. I have 20 seedlings started and will be planting them in about 2 years. If they can survive there and also in your part of the state, gives me great hope they will survive here as well. We get about 12 inches of precipitation a year "semi desert" zone 6b 7a.
