Spring protection for Zone 7 by novice

Post by TerdalFarm » Fri Mar 05, 2010 6:03 pm

I spent all day today in a suit in a windowless building downtown.
When I came home, it was 70oF! I quickly changed to shorts, t-shirt and no shoes. Drank the first gin-and-tonic of Summer
by the pool and admired my palms. They looked pretty good to me--after the second gin.
From best to worst:
1) Chamearops humilis with heat tape on trunk and under a bucket looks phenomenal. The past two winters, milder but with no heat tape, it defoliated. Not this year!
2) Butia capitata with heat tape on trunk under burlap in palm hut/dog house looks much better than I expected for its first winter in the ground.
My only wireless thermometer is in here. Was 23oF a couple of days ago. Today, it was 34oF in the morning and 84oF in the afternoon. No, no dog was responsible this time! The entire south side was open for both readings (it was closed for the 23oF).
3) Butia under bucket. Third winter in ground. Petioles and spear are green; spear is firm when tugged. Basically, same as always this time of year. It will look like my avatar image again by mid-summer.
4) Trachy blasted by wind. Petioles are green, as are the lower leaves. Spear is green and does not tug. I think it will survive.
I didn't take new photos as all four look the same as in February:

which to me is a good thing. Hey, not worse after another few weeks of cold weather! :)

Erik, great news, especially the Trachy :D It sure took a beating.

Your heat tapes have worked great, especially in this unusually-cold winter.
So every winter milder than that should be a breeze for you from here on in. :D

Glad to hear a Chamaerops--with heat tape--won't defoliate.
Good to know.

Hopefully you won't have to spend much time in the windowless building (YUK!)
..bet you don't want to head south now that your weather's so nice.

Another G&T and the palms would be a foot taller

I owe a big debt to you, Barb, and the other folks here for getting my palms through this difficult winter.
As I've written before, a year ago I thought I had brought my two Washies (1 filifera, 1 robusta) through the winter only to lose them to rot in March/April. I don't want a repeat.
The forecast for the next week is continued nice weather--highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s; rain Monday. No freeze in the forecast, although history says we'll see freezes occasionally for another 5 weeks or so.
So, what should I be doing?
Here are my plans, using the same numbers as above...
1) Ch. humilis: set bucket next to it for emergencies but don't plan to use it. Pull hay away to let soil warm. Spray with copper. Keep heat tape on just in case.
2) Butia in dog-house hut: keep hut in place, but keep south side open. Remove burlap trunk wrap and heat tape. Spray with copper.
3) Butia under bucket: set bucket next to it for emergencies but don't plan to use it. Pull hay away but keep water bottles next to trunk to buffer temp. wings. Spray with copper.
4) Trachy: remove burlap and fiberglass insulation from trunk. Spray trunk, crown, leaves (=everything) with copper. Put bucket over crown, but elevated with stakes so that there is air flow under bucket to prevent over-heating.
Any feedback?

Heck, Erik, everybody helps everybody, and poof, one day all that information comes together and you just know instinctively what's right/wrong/borderline.
And then you fall in love with a Zone 10 palm and start learning all over again.

Gotta admit I was sweatin' buckets about that Trachy of yours.
I might still take it away from you.

Like your plans...perfect.
But with temps in the 60's and lows in 40's, since the Trachy spear hasn't pulled (no, don't tug on it anymore! ) it doesn't need a bucket over it.

But it still hates wind...winter or summer.

Deja Vu

Post by TerdalFarm » Fri Mar 19, 2010 12:30 pm

Here I am in the jungle of Belize, doing my jaguar research and admiring the palms in the forest.
Just like in January, except this time I have my wife with me. She is complaining about the cold!
All has been great, except that I received an automated email with--get this--a winter storm advisory for Bixby, Oklahoma. Weekend forecast of 4-8" snow, locally to 10", and overnight lows to ~25oF. Yikes!
I emailed the house-sitter to put the 20 gallon buckets back over the little Butia, Ch. humilis and Trachy (supported by stakes). The big Butia still has overhead protection from the palm hut. I took the heat tape off two weeks ago.
The house-sitter is good with animals, but plants are not of much interest so I don't know if she'll do anything.
I'll be home by Wednesday to let you know how they fared.

a winter storm advisory for Bixby
Oh poop!

Tell the housesitter her job depends on developing a quick love of plants.
And to let the dog sleep in the palm hut again.

Oh man!!!! :?
Fingers crossed for you.

palms covered

Post by TerdalFarm » Sat Mar 20, 2010 1:13 pm

Phew! She covered the palms.
At home, it is 31oF and snowing now (Saturday afternoon) with 11 mph winds. Snow accumulation forecasts are for 10-14" of snow, although I am sceptical as the ground is warm.
As for me, it is 91oF where I am this afternoon....
