Banana (Musa basjoo) seed

Post by desertdave » Wed Apr 19, 2006 10:20 pm

How difficult would it be to cultivate Musa basjoo from seed? I would love to try growing them but the prices I have heard for small seedlings are a bit high, esp. since I bought about $60 of Rhododendrons yesterday. Also where can one find seed for cheap for them? Are there any bananas that might be tougher than M. basjoo, that are at least somewhat readily available?

I haven't heard of anybody growing musa basjoo from seed. You usually grow them from the pups that the mother plant puts out. You can grow Musa sikkimensis from seed and it is almost as hardy as basjoo. I have one i have grown from seed that i started last summer. I'm hoping this year it will reach 7 or 8 feet tall. :D The good thing with bananas is they grow super fast.

Regards,
Jay
