Hardy Eucs

Post by desertdave » Thu Mar 30, 2006 10:31 pm

I am curious what some of the hardiest Eucalyptus are, and how hardy they are on average. Also, generally do they resprout from the stump, roots, etc. if their tops are frozen?

Also on a related topic are there any Eucs that might take to the indoors, possibly as bonsai or a slower smaller growing species?

Hardy Eucs

Post by Wes North Van » Fri Mar 31, 2006 10:20 pm

I have a Eucalyptus Debeuzevillei and it is supposeto be hardy to zone 7 and maybe even zone 6. It is rumoured to have survived -23C in Britian.
This is my favourite euc because of the white trunk and branches.
It grows to 15 to 30' but can be pruned. I do not know of any eucs that can be grown indoors but give this one a try outside.

A Eucalyptus was able to survive are very mild winter like -22C. But when it reaches -26C = zone 5b they could act as a perennial but maybe not. I have not grown one but other people who do get bad looking trees in march. But they grow their leaves in june.

We have a very nice Eucalyptus Leucoxylon in back garden which gets covered in pink flowers. It also has neat peeling bark.
Here is today's snapshot.
PS unfortunately most of it now overhangs the neighbours garden!!!!!!
