Hi from the UK :)

Post by stephenprudence » Mon May 18, 2009 1:54 pm

Hi I'm Stephen and I live in western England by Liverpool in equivalent zone 9a. The average absolute minimum temperature in winter is usually around -2C, although this year we had a particularly harsh winter and got -5C. UK is famous for its cool and wet summers, and here it's no different although we do have some of the best weather in the UK summer and winter. Unfortunately at the moment that's not the case as its cool and rainy! :(

I joined this forum because I'm interested to see what our friends across the pond grow, and I know how variable the U.S climate is, so I'm looking forward to posting on here and to see what you guys grow!

Below is a list of the plants I grow (not all palms).. All grown outside unless stated

Palms
Trachycarpus fortunei
Chamaerops humilis
Phoenix canariensis
Rhapis excelsa
Chamaedorea elegans
Chamaedorea radicalis

Succulents/Cacti
Aeoniums (variable)
Aloe striatula
Aloe aristata
Agave americana 'var'
Agave filifera
Crassula ovata 'Money Plant'
Sclumbergera x Buckleyii (Christmas Cactus)

Other exotics
Yucca elephantipes
Rhododendron simsii
Schefflera arboricola
Asplenium nidus
Lampranthis spectabilis
Boungainvillea glabra
Jasminum polyanthum
Musa basjoo
Strelitzia reginae
Callistemon citrinus
Nerium oleander
Citrus limon
Olea europaea
Fuchsia triphylla
Impatiens 'fuzion glow'
Passiflora caerulea
Passiflora edulis (grown inside for now)
Cycas revoluta

Anyway I do look forward to posting in the forum :)

Hi Stephen, welcome aboard.

I'd give my eye teeth to be in a 9A.

Your property must be stunning with that amazing variety of tropicals.
We would all love to see pictures...and dream of owning some of those.

I've killed more Bougainvillea than anyone in history...5 or 6 at last count.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Thanks everyone :)

Barb, My garden is actually very small I just cram everthing in as at the moment everything is quite young/small but it just gets shoved in, in every available space, but much of the stuff isn't completely hardy so some has to be protected in winter but I find if I protected all winter it would probably cause a lot of unwanted rot, so I tend to only protect when it needs it.

I'll post some pictures up on the main forum :)
