Tis the season! New fronds

Must be the warmth from basement woodstove, and daily mistings...they're all taking off nicely again.

Here's the Spindle:


The white stuff on Sabal uresana (at left) and mexicana are misting drops:

The Bamboo palm is going crazy...third new frond since bringing it inside:

I still haven't got the right tool for cutting off the spent petiole. Probably need an exacto/lab knife.


The Cordyline is growing despite low light in the hall.


I can pretend it's not winter as long as I stay indoors

Neat how your Bizzie's green spear so quickly turns blue; these are gorgeous palms.

Looks like the CIDP is growing two at once!

Barb and Steve - nice lookin' stuff you got there. I'll get my camera out this weekend and post some spear photos. I always love seeing other peoples plants this time of year. My Foxtail just opened a nice big frond. Look at it everyday and smile. If it only knew it was 4 hardiness zone removed from its home. Please do not tell it.

I took a few pictures Sun Dec 13, 2008 of a few of my larger palms and their emerging and just opened spears (as the case may be). Got more, will add later.

Here is my Mexican Fan Palm. This palm does suprising well inside in a west facing window. no bugs, no browning, no problems .... ever. This palm will throw 2-3 new fronds this winter. This is its 3rd winter inside, it is bascially maintenance free and looks great all winter. Although I recommend you keep your distance from it because it will jab you if you get too close.



Phoenix Reclinata. 3 years old. This is a beautiful plam and relatively maintenance free.



My Wodyetia Bifurcata (Foxtail) palm. Its stands about 7-8 foot tall and has been easy to grow inside. I have had this palm 2 years and it has easily doubled in size. A new spear just opened and you can see its a fairly large spear.
The new spear is the one in front, kind of skinny. It opened two weeks ago. This same palm had a spear that would not open all last winter so I feel kind fortunate that this one opened.



The dreaded cocos nucifera (coconut). Just trying to get it through until springtime. Really I have had no problems with it but it seems to need very high humidity which I just can't provide inside (obviously). For crying out loud I live in Kansas, its winter time , the heats on and its dry even with a whole house humidifier. I do the best I can.

Kent, holy cow has your stuff ever grown this year!

Nice Mexican fan. Three recently emerged fronds and two or three more to come. That's one prolific palm.
That reclinata looks good too, and that Foxtail is superb.
What's a foxtail's potted (mature) height?

Re the cocos, have you got some space for it in the bathroom. Showers = great humidity as long as it's warm.

Your stuff is clean, good colour...well done.

Thank you Barb. The shower is a good idea , but I am a very modest man, it makes me nervous to shower when others are in the room
I do have a warm air humidifier in the room with the coco and in winter I run it twice a week for 24 hours at a time. It does pretty well.

Not sure of the mature height of a foxtail in a pot. I hope this one slows down because if it doubles in size over the next two years I am in trouble.
At this point I will leave it in the same container (about 15 gallon size) for the next 2-3 years.

With your ceiling height you should be able to keep that Foxtail for quite a few years, Let's see how large you can grow that Coconut too

nice work barb. your plants love your little piece of paradise. Great work with dypsis decaryi. Love those palms, I have two of them, fairly small but the heel is starting to get large. I know nothing about the LED lights but if it is working for you let us know. Looks kind of like you may be doing karoke in that room with the disco thang.

What gave it away...the old stereo cabinet, an ironing board, the hammer?

I love the triangles, too, none have shown a heel yet.
The Spindle, which wasn't much larger than one of the triangles a couple of years ago, has grown like mad and is now twice the height of my tallest dypsis.

I had the LED lights on since end December, about 15 hrs a day, on the seedling palms.
Room is kept at about 60 F.
The little palms have definitely responded to the red/blue light spectrum, even though the LED lites were situated farther away than recommended on the internet (about 8 inches).

You're lucky to have that cathedral ceiling for your tall foxtail. My house ceilings are all 8 feet...darn!

I had wondered how that Joey was doing...and how you're going to raise the GH roof when it grows its 15-foot long leaves. Looks good.

Nice leaf on that Salacca...only one older leaf that color?
I thought the emerging leaves were the only ones that showed that trait.

Your Cat palm looks good. Is that a second one immersed?
The roots must be spread out all over your pond by now!

You've still got some room in there
...wish I could send you some of my Papyrus, it loves the water too.

The Salacca tends to open leafs as soon as they emerge, in a week or two, that leaf will be larger & about a foot taller.

Cat Palms are doing good, have a couple that have been growing fully submerged for a couple years now. The roots are growing up out of the containers and then down along the bottom of the tank.
(The fish seem to like the taste of them, but the Palms are winning

How did you start your Papyrus ? Does it overwinter?

I like the idea of bog palms, great for pond and fish environments.
Cataractarum palms would be good choices for people who tend to overwater their plants.

I got the Papyrus at a nursery.
There's not much to look at on mine, basically looks like a tall bunch of weedy grass when it's young.
But I saw John's (okanagandesertpalms) last year...8 feet tall and gorgeous! (the papyrus...not John sorry John)

Here's the "flowers" on mine:


A non-draining saucer or bowl helps overwinter these indoors. In summer it's into the fishpond if it can handle full sun.

Barb I used to be 8ft tall and bullet proof depending what I was drinking at the bar.Lol Those were the days. The papyrus you got will be perfect for full sun and your fish pond the hotter the better . Are you fertilizing them now?

I myself had "those days", but thank goodness, memory fades.

I'm guessing papyrus, like some greenhouse-grown palms, will have to be slowly acclimatized to full sun at the fish pond.
Apparently they need high phosphorous fertilizer.
I haven't fertilized it yet.
What do you use?

Barb I use miracle grow for my Papyrus and they seem to like it. I`ve never done research into what numbers they like ex.12/4/12 and trace elements ect. BTW the bottle palm you picked up for me is doing great. New spear is almost opened now.

Sounds like Miracle Gro is a great all purpose/all plant boost.
Your papyrus is 8 feet, so there's no reason for me to try anything else.

We'll look forward to seeing the Bottle Palm's new frond.
Mine is at a standstill (thank goodness)...8 inches from the ceiling
With your high ceilings, you just might have to overwinter mine next year
