I know this isn't much to you all, but I have been into cycads for about 3 years now and I have NEVER EVER had a new pup from a tree I have. I have BOUGHTEN cycads that already had pups, but I never had one that MADE pups while I had it.
UNTIL NOW!!!!
I noticed this yesterday while showing my wife the new flushes on everything else.

I then noticed that one of the trees I bought that already had a pup is also starting a new leaf on the pup. This tree is also throwing up a HUGE flush in it's mother trunk.

I agree that it is absolutely fascinating to watch these plants grow, flush, cone, and produce suckers (vegetative growths originating from below or at the soil surface) and offsets (vegetative growths originating from the stem above ground). Below is a Zamia inermis that I grew from seed. It has a caudex around 5" in diameter, and every flush until this last one came only from the main apex... but during this most recent flush it also sent up leaves from 6 suckers around the periphery. The other plant growing right next to it is also flushing, but it still has only one apex.

Is it a trait of Zamia inermis to produce offsets so freely?

Yes it does. The suckers (not offsets) that arise on the periphery cause the caudex to grow wider and wider, but typically the plant maintains a single primary taproot at the center of the caudex mass and the suckers never grow their own roots... strange, indeed!
