New thread Idea for Cycad lovers

I was thinking about this and let me know if it's a good idea.
With the super responses to KNNN's "A Nice Start to the Season" thread, I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread since we are not in the "start" of the season anymore, to start showing new flushes that are starting with the warmth of late Spring and early Summer. I thought we could post our pics of new flushes that are starting now, then later we can "edit" that post with updated pics.
I'll start us off....

This is a Cardboard that Steve gave me recently. It started the leaf you see now about a month ago and you can barely see it, but there is actually ANOTHER one starting already. Thanks Steve!

This is a Wilailik that I got from "Living Fossil". When I got it, it had a broken root. Thanks to Robert Chumley for training me up on how to fix cycads with broken roots! I thought this one was dead as I have had it for a long time and nothing was happening. Low and behold I checked it today and WOW.

This is a Petrae Cycad. I had never had one of these and always wanted one VERY VERY bad. "Living Fossil" threw it in as a bonus to my order. It too had a broken root. Thanks Mr. Chumley.

This is a young Dioon Edule that KNNN gave me about two years ago. This is the second flush it has put out (this is not a "flush" yet but it is going to start soon. This looks to be a multiple leaf flush as it is really swelling on the side.

This is my 2 1/2' tall Taitungensis that Robert Chumley sent me. This is the one that had a BEAUTIFUL 5 leaf flush about two months ago that some fat piece of crap that is as nimble as an elephant broke two leafs off. The photo is too fuzzy to tell, but it is at least an 8 leaf flush (at least it is until yours truely SCREWS IT UP AGAIN) and should look WONDERFUL by July.

Glad to hear yours are doing well

These Cycas sp. "Wilailak" / Petraea are a tough lot, The fronds on this one were torn off in a storm a little over a month ago, it's coming back for round two

Most of my stuff has taken a beating so far this year, hoping for maybe, a little calmer Summer.

Update pics

Smaller Wilailik.

Petrae. Leafs are REALLY stretching up.

2 1/2' tall Taitungensis.

This is a Dioon Edule with a caudex of a bit larger than a GrapeFruit. Can't tell how many leafs thou.

I was going to take updates of the smaller Edule and an Encephalartos Senticosus flushes, but not too much progress from last pic.

Petrea flush is all but done. It is a WONDERFUL 2 leafer. I am just as happy with this as I thought I would be.

Encephalartos Senticosus. Starting to be able to see the green in the new flush.

Small Edule starting to be able to see green in the flush.

Bigger Edule (Grapefruit size) starting to push up the new flush about 1" a day.

Taitungensis now has 13 new leafs that are shooting up and should be done by 4th og July.

Re the camomile tea, you suggested misting them.
Can I water them with the rest of the camomile tea...to make sure the natural fungicide goes down further than the misting did?

The mold disappeared after the camomile tea spray...thank you.

I thought those of you who only have small plants might like to see a couple new flushes on larger, mature plants:

Male Dioon spinulosum with 3.5-foot trunk and two suckers (you can see new flushes emerging on the main stem and the largest sucker)

Closeup of D. spinulosum new flush on main stem (note the height of the leaves compared to the roof eave)

Large, female, broad-leaflet form Encephalartos ferox with about a 10-foot spread

Closeup of new flush on E. ferox just beginning to emerge (will post followup photos as they continue to emerge)

As I said before, I think Spinulosum are my favorite Dioon. I bet those would do GREAT out front of the greenhouse at your house, but then after they flush put them back on the shaded West side, by the garage so they won't get burnt. YOU WILL ABSOLUTLY LOVE Spinulosums buddy.

Steve, nice sized caudex on your new ones.

Dioon spinulosum are inching their way to the top of my favs, a close second is edule, but spinulosum will pass them in size from the outset. My dioon's new growth looks puny beside the spinulosum's flush.

You are very welcome, Steve. Here are two more photos of the E. ferox flush taken two days after the last one that I posted above and then again two days after that (which was today). I will try to get (and post) photos every two days until the leaves are full-sized.

Having visited Dioon edule in habitat, would you know the highest soil temperatures these Cycads are exposed to?

The ones I have in containers are growing fast, just want to make sure I'm not pushing things too far.

Steve, that is a good question. Since I visited the population in in Veracruz in January, I don't have any personal experience to relate. However, Dioon edule is one of the absolute toughest plants that I know of, and it should be able to tolerate temperatures well over 100F... but the combination of high temperature and high humidity could potentially be detrimental.

I don't know if this helps,

Have these sited in full sun with soil temps up to 120*F, they do seem to enjoy it

I've never taken the soil temps, but that 120F is good to know.
My dioon edule is going back into full sun, as its bluish leaves seem to require it.
