Moved the Pachypodiums outside....

Post by Knnn » Mon Apr 21, 2008 4:36 pm

These sat in a corner all Winter and had about a 1/2" of dust on them :D

Re-potted, cleaned off and ready for a new season.

They are looking good.

Did you start any of them from seed?

Steve, I pot planted mine outside last week. Then came those two days of sustained 40-50 MPH winds (not gusts, but sustained) and they lost a few leaves. But they have LOVED it so far. Sure you know this, but give them lots of water with this new Sun and within 2 days you will have lots of leaves.

Nice!
What do you think the max height will be with proper care?
Probably the GH roof??

My new Pachy hasn't grown an inch this winter in the sunny south window.

Set yours outside once temps start to get above 70's (and maybe bring them inside if lows are below 50's) and water really well. You will be able to visably see new growth in a week.

Barb,

Not sure on the max. height, seem to grow about 1' - 2' a year on average.
If I can get them to bloom, they might start branching.

Allen,

Those originally were small ones from the discount plant rack at WalMart :D

Have some Pachypodium geayi started from seed a couple years ago, they are just starting to pick up speed.

Thanks Steve.

I just germinated 2 P. Geayi and was wondering how long it would be before they showed a little size.

Nice start Steve.
My Pachy doesn't seem to be doing much this year since I planted it in the ground.
Weather is either cool or blazing hot, it's sulking a bit.
Hoping for a growth spurt soon.

Yours looks very healthy.

Mine are absolutely BOOMING. I am at work right now, but will try to remember to take a pic later. I put them out front where they get solid morning sun up until about 2:00pm.
Lucky, as soon as you start hitting days with high 70's low 80's for highs and 60's for lows, WATCH OUT.

Those Pachypodiums (pachipodii? ) have grown so much since last year.
So tropical looking that these could indeed "double" as y.rostrata--albeit spiny--for those of us who are impatient.

Before my big pachypodium died a couple of years ago, I noticed it held its head of leaves virtually year round as it was in the house during winter.
That's probably why yours are making such growth spurts to put out more/new leaves?

Probably the nutrient rich fish-water too!

I've tried them both ways, if they hold their leaves during the winter, they start growing earlier in the season.

I tried to slow mine down a little by letting them go dormant last winter, don't really think it is going to make a difference :D
( You should see the fish now, they are about 1' long, how large do goldfish grow :?:

Your fish are a foot long?
I've heard that goldfish grow according to the size of the pond...given enough space they can get pretty large.

Bigger fish = more fertilizer :D

I believe Pachypodium lamerei reach 12-15 feet in habitat.
Yours are well on their way.

You know what, I do not use cow manure on these. The manure only goes on cycad/dioons.
With these, I kept in the greenhouse over winter and when temps got higher than 60 with lows no lower than high 40's, I put them outside in the landscape. People told me that I was going to kill them cause it was still too cold. But I proved them wrong
So basically, no secret, just LOTS of unfiltered bright direct sunlight and water.

Then they obviously like your potting mix.
Mine has yellowish leaves, and my soil is alkaline about 7.2.
Thinking they might prefer somewhat more acidic conditions?

Steve, are yours in alkaline or acidic based soil?

Barb,
The mix I'm using starts out around 7.0, but will drop to 5.5 - 6 in time due to our water.

I have noticed with mine that the lower leaves will turn yellow when it is not getting enough water, while the newest growth will turn black when it is getting too much.

And nice colour on that one in the GH.

Maybe you can give me a tip on what I've done wrong.
Leaves are all speckled.

I doubt it'll get as big as the one that got left outside when it froze a couple of years ago.

Steve, I might be able to take a pic later, but this Spring, I put mine outside and it developed what almost looked like center rot. I went ahead and left it out side and the center got black. However since then, it is now booming with growth, but from about 9 different "scales" or growing points. Will this now be a 9 headed Pachy?

If we don't want them to branch at that point, can we cut off the new stuff to encourage it to get taller on a single stem?
Or would that lead to 18 points?

I agree Pachy lamerei aren't great near a sidewalk, but the absolute worst thing is a Ponytail Palm.
Mine's like razor wire, and just touching it leads to blood dots on bare legs.
I may put it on the roof

Going to try and find a spot for the Pachypodium inside the greenhouse, taking it in & out of the house each year is getting dangerous ( I always end up full of holes afterwards

The Pachy will enjoy the sunny greenhouse this winter.
Those thorns look even more lethal as the plant ages. :?

Mine is nowhere near your plant's size, but I wrap about 15 pages of newspaper around the stem and tie it with masking tape, making it not so dangerous to handle.
