Palm photos Victoria British Columbia Canada

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Wed Apr 30, 2008 7:19 pm

My wife and I were in Victoria last weekend and I took some palm photos and picked up some seedlings. I estimate I have over 500 T.fortunei to pot up now. A special thanks to Islander for the seedlings and tips on where to take photos. Thank you also to Jeff for showing his excellent palm garden in blustery conditions Monday .

Thanks for those great pics...cool to see so many palms on the Island.

That little city lot with the older home, and 10 or 11 big Trachys in the front yard...wonderful!

Great shots of "Jeff's house" and palms. Wonderful specimens, including the trunking yuccas.

500 palm seedlings...wow...I'd help if I could

Simply AMAZING to see palms like that in Canada.
I wish you could send some of those seedlings to the U.S.!!!!!

The Jubea (sp?) & Butia are WONDERFUL. Also cool to see all the different tyes of Trachies in a large tree form.

John,
Ten Trachy seedlings?
You've seen my 31 year old Trachy pics...are you sure you want 10 more to be treated that way?

Happy to give 10 a new home.

John, I appreciate you stopping by to rescue a large number of seedlings. There will most likely be an even larger amount to rescue next year as I test Trachys in different conditions. That means a second location of homeless seedlings. More than 5000 seedlings (over 3 years) were rescued by palm enthusiasts on the island. I deal with thousands of seeds every year so I make use of them. It's mostly fortunei but it will shift to hybrids and wagnerianus.

Enjoy

There should be more palms at English Bay.

Islander, I think it's wonderful you're making these available to people.
I've heard of some folks who recommend Round-up for palm seedlings

Poor John's got all the back-breaking work...

This palm was planted at least 30 years ago in the Saanich area.

John: Brahea edulis planting

Post by Islander » Sun May 04, 2008 9:35 am

These two Brahea edulis palms are each forming a thick trunk. The palms were sold by Larry. They perform better than Washingtonia. I planted mine this April (purchased in Vancouver). Breahea palms have a larger root system, trunk and leaves. I don't grow the armata because it's slower. My edulis puts out fronds like a trachy.

This is a nice example of Brahea edulis in greater Victoria.
