Sacrificed one Bizzie nobilis to look inside...

Post by lucky1 »

After 4 months next to the basement woodstove, thought I'd break one open:

Grated the still-hard coat...no go.
Pounded it with a hammer until crack appeared.

"white dot" = radicle?

No apparent rot, the husk cavity was almost entirely filled by the embryo?
Does the radicle break through from the inside?
Or does the husk have to rot before the radicle can emerge?
Or both in unison? Resembles a walnut.

I'm guessing the other Bizzie seeds will take another 3-4 months to pop.

I don't know anything about germinating Bismarckia Nobilis, but they are one of my favorite palms. More importantly, does your husband know you are using his hammer to smack palm tree seeds. Put the hammer back before someone gets hurt.
Kent in Kansas
where it's cold in winter (always)
and hot in summer (usually)

Nope, none have popped after 5 months.
Palm seeds are a study in patience...makes basket weaving look like a speed sport.

Hey Kent, my tools don't disappear when there are flowers on 'em
