Just some seedling pics

Post by Cali-wanna-b »

Hi all,

The robins are back, geese are flying north and I am going crazy waiting for warmer weather. Here are some pics of a few seedlings I have to help us move March along. All were started from seed.

One year old Medjool date and Robusta

Very nice!

I'm tying to sprout some seeds myself. I believe they're Queen palm seeds my neighbor brought back from Florida. Soaked a few days and planted in shallow pot with plastic rap over it to hold in the moisture. We'll see.

Nice healthy lookin' stuff there. Do you have these outdoors when your weather permits?

Cheers, Barrie.

Mark, I hope you have better luck than I did with the queens. I had one out of about 20 seeds pop for me. I didn't use bottom heat which I think would of really helped.

Yes, they will go outside this spring into my greenhouse. The Date and Robusta have been in my cool greenhouse all winter. I brought a few seedlings in this winter just to see what their growth would be compared to the greenhouse. It's amazing what a few degrees will do for plant growth. If you look behind the Medjool date in my first pic, you will see another 2 year old Canary Island Date seedling. The one I brought inside has almost tripled in size compared to the CIDs in the greenhouse.

Craig, congrats, very nice specimens.
Good growth for their ages, I think.

Yup, the geese are back (honk, honk, honk...) noisy beggars.
Robins are here too and already fighting (must be males  ) as they stake out good trees.
Killdeer are adding to the racket.
Love it all.

Have you posted pics of your GH?
Sorry I don't remember.

I have a little 8'x10' poly house I got at Home depot. Nothing great or photo worthy, but it works.

Craig great pics of your healthy looking palms. What are you using for soil and fertilizer?

Thanks all for the kind comments!!

John

I have been using an unscientific blend of Miracle Grow Palm and Cactus soil, coarse compost, coarse construction sand, perlite and topsoil. I usually try to mix it 3-1-2-1-1. It works good for most palms. Those palms that need more drainage like Braheas I add more sand and less potting mix. So far, so good.
