Hello all! New here

Post by Mark » Tue Jan 22, 2008 8:37 am

Hello everyone,

I'm new here. I think I have read everything on here and am totally amazed and inspired by all of you. I thouht I was the only palm nut in the world but have discovered that is definitly not the case. I'm not quite as knowlegable as all of you but hope to be soon.

Here is a picture of two of my Queen palms wintering over in my great room.

Hi Mark & welcome to the forum. Nice looking queens. They grow quickly & will be too large for the house in no time, better build a very tall encloser outside for them...

Thanks Laaz!

Yeah don't know what I'm going to do next year. The one leaning on the chair is 3 feet too tall for my 11.5 ceiling height. The other shorter one is right to the ceiling. Love to build a huge very tall sun room someday but for now I'll just do what ever works.

Here's a picture of what they looked like when I got them the end of last May. They have grown a couple feet and doubled the fronds they had.

Mark, Welcome! and those are great looking Queens 8)

I've heard of other people leaning their Palms over for over wintering, it does seem to work :D

Welcome to the forum. the way that your palms are growing, you will have to have them at a 45* angle by next winter.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

Cali,

That whats I'd like to do. I have many windows facing south. I Have more palms down it the walkout basement too since it gets a lot of light as well. The hard part is hoofing them around on a dolly, especially the 14 footer. Its quite a challenge.

Barb,

I've thought about covering the entire pool with a greenhouse.... but I love soaking up the sun too much. I'll have to find somehting though if I coutinue along this path. You know what? I drove (only 1 mile) with those palms sticking out the T-Tops of my Camaro to get them home. Well worth it though.

Here's a couple more pics. Don't mind the bunnies cages. They run the place.

Enjoy!

Mark, GH and pool enclosure. Two birds with one stone.
Good you only drove 1 mile...there wouldn't have been much palm left after 20.

Nice phoenix r. (I pruned mine "up" yesterday...probably wrong time of year).
Is your last pic a fishtail?

Barb,

Yeah I drove real slow. Got many looks as well.

No. The last palm is an Andonida- Christmas palm. It's looked a lot better but keeps sending out new spears. Doesn't want to get taller though.

My palm ID skills are zero
Maybe it needs regular misting and/or closer to a window?
A lot of stubborn-to-grow palms seem to respond to regular misting.
Allow water to sit for a day or so before using in mister...

Barb,

It doesn't much look like an Adonidia in the pic. I have another one and its about 6.5 feet tall. Not as short and compact as this one. It used to have longer fronds but now they grow shorter. ?? I will try the misting with aged water. I usually use it right from the tap. I'll also try to repot it in the spring... if ever it comes.

Thanks Mark

My wife would kill me if I tried that. I have 17 ft vaulted ceilings and I'm still not allowed to bring anything inside... Garage is the limit...

That's too bad. 17 feet could hold a nice size.

Barb,

I meant to ask you.... .you said you just pruned "up" your phoenix. Is that something that should be done regularly? My doesn't really have much of a trunk on it. More bush like. Is that something that encourages them to be more tree like? With a nice trunk. I only cut off the dead or badly yellowed fronds. I'd appreacitate some input on that.

I just like the look of boots on a trunk, and since it was growing like crazy, thought I'd get it UP a bit.
Otherwise it's awfully wide before it gets tall.
not much room for the other stuff beside it.

Nothing severe, mind you, just a couple of fronds off each "side" of each trunk.

When brought home in October:

and after pruning up:

I hope others will chime in if I'm way off base. Stuff is growing like mad in the warm house!
