When your not dreaming of palm trees........

Post by Cali-wanna-b » Thu Jan 03, 2008 2:56 pm

what are some of your other hobbies and interests?

Me? I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Playing football(american) is a way of life in Southwest Pennsylvania. I love football and bleed the black and gold of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I retired from football after an unsuccessful attempt to walk on at Pennsylvania State University. I also grew up playing baseball and still play in an over 30 league during the summer. In the fall I can be found in the woods chasing whitetail deer and turkeys. I am an avid bow-hunter and love the solitude of the woods in the fall.

So when your not thinking of the tropics what do you like to do?

Let me think

Post by Wes North Van » Thu Jan 03, 2008 5:46 pm

Hmmm.

How about my wife and kids, Jesus then hockey, hockey and then hockey.

I also played football till I was in my early twenties then I just did not get big enough and fast enough to go any further.

I love to travel to where else the tropics.

and finally Jeeps.

Yup that about sums me up when I am not in the garden or playing with palms.

Yeah, Spending time my wife and kids. I am a four wheeler fanatic. That's my other hobbie I have been doing for 15 years or so. Instead of Jeeps I build Toyotas. My current project is my 85 4runner. I just finished the suspension this last week. Now it's gears, lockers and tires. :D My wife thinks I am pretty crazy for working on my truck out in the cold when it was snowing. I guess I will have to build a big garage then. That's after the bigger greenhouse of course. :) I also do graphic design and love to draw etc.

Here's a few pics of the work I did to my truck this past week.

If I am not dreaming about Palms, I am thinking about Bananas, yuccas and exotic plants.

I still think of touring offroad, although my Nissan Frontier has been gone a year. One of my highlights was going over Yanks Leap south of Barkerville in the midst of a thunderstorm. You haven't lived until you have looked down on a thunderstorm. The 7 hour trip from Barkerville to Williams Lake was made even more interesting When the storm knocked out power and we drove in pitch black for trip down the mountain and on to Williams Lake. Watching the grizzlies fish for salmon in the Alaska panhandle comes a close second.

I also love the feel of a beautifully grained piece of oak, walnut or cherry. I won't be building furniture again until I have finished renovating the house. But I should be able to do a little wood turning.

I also follow the Eskimos and the CFL as well as watch the Oilers lose(or win in a shoot out). Go Nucks.

Barrie

I can't seem to get interested in professional sports anymore. It's the same regurgitated stuff over and over with overpaid watered down talent. I know people that spend 20 hrs a week in front of their TV watching sports! IMHO a waste of time.

More to the topic at hand, my hobbies have previously and some now include music and playing guitar, wood working, coin collecting, art, my dogs, hiking, travel, history, palms and exotics (of course), automotive, beer ... probably many more I can't recall thanks to the beer.

Cheers, Barrie.

Beer

Post by Wes North Van » Fri Jan 04, 2008 4:41 pm

Ah yes beer. My favourite is dos equis and some of the BC micro breweries.
Bowen Island, Granville Island, etc.

Barrie any good micro breweries on the island?

Hiking is also one of my favourite past times. Living on the North Shore I am surrounded by mountians and rivers and the ocean so I hike a lot with my wife and my shepherd / wolf cross dog.
See I forgot to mention that and it probably did have something to do with beer.

Barrie; I would agree with you on professional sports being the same old same old. But I doubt that anyone would think that most CFL players are overpaid. I think that 20 hrs per week of professional sports would probably kill me. 3 to 4 hours every week or 2 is enough for me.

I'd have to agree Allen about the CFL (Canadian Football League) and them not being overpaid. Often it's beeing a scouting league for the NFL and players showing good promise are given contracts there.
There are those that would argue sports is good entertainment, nothing more than what I would consider a concert or Egyptian artifacts exibit. So it's where you what to spend your money and what you get out of it personally.

Wes ... There's plenty of micro-breweries here on Vancouver Island but I'm a mainstream beer drinker. Once you leave town for any reason, the micro-brew guys are scrambling and wasting time testing new beers to fine one they like. Me, I roll in and order a Budweiser anywhere in the world and I'm not wasting time sampling. Straight to the business at hand

Laaz ... good to see your avatar up again. I just had a few Corona recently and during last summer with fresh Key limes from my little tree. My mind flashes back to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico nearly every time I have one.

Cheers, Barrie.

Like you Aaron, I get to enjoy much of the outdoors. I work right at the edge of the Ocean and consider myself fortunate for all that it offers. So I can be outdoors at work and enjoy my day there. It's always interesting to see the look on someones face after seeing a whale, bald eagle or seal for the first time.
Here's a small glimpse of what I see everyday at work. The cliffs on Gabriola Island are 300' high and from this view about a mile away.
Cheers, Barrie.

Cool. 8) Cruisers are my favorite. I could never really find one at a reasonable price. They hold their value. My previous yota was an 82 4x4 short box. I ended up stuffing a chevy 350 small block into it. :D Sold it to a buddy and now regret it. :( I wanted the 4runner so I could take my kids on the trails. :)

Beer...I thought I heard someone call :D
My fav beer is 1516 from Okanagan Spring Brewery right in downtown Vernon, North Okanagan.

My fav thing is the ever-elusive search for a fossil...of anything!
Late winter and early Fall will find me and the dog in the hills, with camera, pokin' around at rocks ' stuff
on the ground.
Good way to get a branch-poke...always looking down
At dinner, husband will notice a scratch on my forehead and say "I see you've been looking for fossils again."

Or digging up Fir seedlings from road easements, pop 'em into plant pots, take them home,
and then spend a week figuring out where I'll plant them.

RETIREMENT is the best...I don't know how I ever found TIME to go to work!
When I hear that some people find retirement boring...I'm amazed!
There still aren't enough hours in the day for me!

I guess this is a kinda "let us know more about yourself" thread. How cool and wonder why this never came up earlier???
I played Football up until I graduated and had many offers, the main one was to play for D-II (at the time it was D-II) Powerhouse Pitt St. who at that time was the "Florida Gators" or "LSU Tigers" of D-II. A man by the name of Dennis Franchione visited my mom and dad and I many times :) HOWEVER, I HATED school so much and I was so in love with this girl, that I decided NOT to play College Football and instead get a job and stay in Topeka with the girl
Pitt St went on to play in 2 straight National Title games, winning one of them, in what would have been my 4 years there
However I DID marry the girl and now have been married to her for 14 years and have 2 sons, so I guess things worked out.
But I did stay close to the game, coaching for over 20 years after graduating and stopping just three years ago so I can/could watch my first son play.
I did pick up playing again, althou I am now 36, being a member of the "Scout" team for a local Semi Pro team in Topeka called the "Topeka Savage". But after about 2 months of that, I tore the ACL, & Meniscus & stretched the MCL to the point of "fraying", so I just had surgery December 17th and am recovering from that as I write this.
So now when I am not dreaming of Palms, I am dreaming of living in Florida or somewhere down south and living the normal life.

Aaron, I see a new bumper sticker business in your future. Words to live by.

Jay, I have a 2003 Ford Exploder you can have to work on. I already replaced the front end and transmission. All before 60,000miles. Now the rear end is going out and I am looking for a very deep lake to park it in.

Barb, the fossil hunting sounds fun. The kids and I like to look for arrowheads in the spring after the farmers till their fields. The skill it took to create a good spear point is unreal.

Kansas, hope you have a good and speedy recovery. It took me about a year and some painful scar tissue stretching to get my ACL back to normal. Don't wish that on anyone.
