Canadians: Would anyone be interested in a group order?

Post by Cameron_z6a_N.S. » Wed Jan 05, 2011 7:10 pm

The title says it all! I'm sure that many of you have looked at plants in the US (many unavailable here), thought about ordering, but stopped when you've seen the high costs associated with minimum orders, phyto certificates, shipping, etc. I think I remember a thread by Barb where she ordered a few Y. rostrata from Plant Delights, and ended up paying something like $300 when it was all over! (Barb, correct me if I'm wrong).

For example, Woodlander's nursery does ship to Canada, and they've got a great selection of unique plants, but there's a $350 minimum order, $60 phyto fee, and a 20% handling charge for each plant. On top of this, there are the shipping costs to pay! Plant Delights is similar, with a $100 minimum order, $75 phyto fee, $5 handling charge per plant, as well as the actual shipping costs! If a group of people placed an order together, the cost per person would be much lower when divided among everyone.

When I was into keeping dart frogs, bromeliads, etc, I started an order for Canadians from a bromeliad nursery in Florida. We pooled our money together, spent hundreds less than we would have on our own, and everyone got an amazing selection of healthy plants!

I haven't been thinking of any particular nursery, but Woodlander's and Plant Delights are good examples. For those who want a more palm-oriented one, I was thinking about EuroPalms, although I'm not sure what to believe about it (I've heard both good and bad). I'm sure there are many other good nurseries, so feel free to suggest any to order from!

If anyone is interested in participating in a group order sometime in the spring, please respond to this thread (and suggest some nurseries if possible) to encourage interest among everyone else! Thanks for reading this post, and sorry if it's a little long!

Cameron.

Great idea Cameron...then there's the distribution (you may have just nominated yourself). :confused2:
So we're talking plants, not seed, right?

And yes you were bang on with what those little Yucca rostrata cost me...good memory (considering they were ~$14.00 each, really added up!)

Re the $60 phyto you mentioned, we'd need to have some assurance that it's not $60 for each species of plant ordered (10 plants = $600 phyto).
Should also be a fairly big nursery, as the little ones don't have any experience with phyto (plant passports, as people call them).

My preference would be a nursery in the U.S.A.
Anybody ever shopped at Phil Bergman's Jungle Music in S.California? http://www.junglemusic.net/
We'd need certification that it's free of Red Pine Weevil.
He's got gorgeous looking stuff.

Will follow this thread with interest.

Barb, it could be plants or seeds, whichever one people prefer! (Although for the trouble we'd be going to, I would probably prefer to buy plants). I don't mind doing the distribution

From the few times I've had to have a phyto certificate, it's always been one certificate to cover all species of plants. I had a recent order from RPS with 15 or so types of seed, and they were all covered with 1 phyto certificate.

Junglemusic looks good, except it says that they don't do international shipments :(

they don't do international shipments
He and I exchanged email greetings at Christmas; I'll contact him for just a general enquiry.
With economic conditions in California, I'm sure he'd make an exception for a decent sized order.

Anyone who hasn't done so yet, I encourage you to click the jungle music link, then select Nursery Tour at the top left to see what he has.
His stuff will blow your socks off. :blob:

Or we could try Don in Wichita Kansas, or Steve in Kansas.
But they'd have to have a university botanical department nearby for the phyto.
There's a lot of paperwork with phyto, so I'd hate to shoulder them with that.

And, naturally, Cameron, people would have to pay up front for their plant orders/phyto/shipping, then a further charge payable immediately to you for your shipping/packaging costs.

I'm getting excited.
Thanks for the great idea, Cameron. :happy6:

Hopefully he will ship!

I would make the order date sometime in the spring, that way people have enough time to save up a bit of $, as well as get the $ sent to me. Last time I actually over-estimated the shipping costs within Canada, so everyone in the order ended up having something like $15 sent back to them with their plants!

Just to bide my time before more Canadians hop on board (where is everybody tonight...doing laundry????? :? )
looked at Jungle Music's price list.

Wow, look at this selection...pages and pages of it, lots of sizes to choose from.

Yeah, I was looking at that earlier, it's got a lot of species! The "Band" prices seem fairly expensive (ie $30 for basically a 1 gallon T. fortunei), so it would probably be more worthwhile to go with 1 or 2 gallon specimens :D . The site is really good, but the one downside I've seen so far is that there doesn't seem to be much for under $30/each.

I can't even think of any nurseries in Florida, do you want to look?
Any you've had your eye on?

And somewhere around here I've got a bookmark for Plant Delights catalogue from North Carolina...will look.

FYI- I'm hoping to hook up with Kevin at Southcoast gardens to get in the plants that I'm interested in. As Barb knows, importing plants can be a beaurocratic nightmare.

barb,

paul showed me that side ( s outhcoastgardens.ca), they have a crazy amount of bulbs/corms, as well as 35 bucks for a 3 gallon trachy. They also have ficus caricia, some yucca. Im sure youll find something there

In terms of this canadian order  I know soemone who orders off of ebay quite alot, everything from orchids, to aroids. I can hit him up for a few dealers. Ill be interested for sure. let me knwo the place and ill take a look to see if im interested in anything.

When i worked at the pet store, ( I managed thefish and reptile department ) We used to get tallandisas in every month, a box the size of a 30 inch tube tv full, and 50 bucks photo. Its teh CITIES cert for animals that gets ya.

Off the top of my head, I can ponly think of PDN. My friend from NC said they have nice quality plants, but small and a bit over priced in some cases. I didnt see too much of a difference, especialy if our loonie is above the greenback!!

Here's something that I've came up with after comparing a couple of websites:

Woodlander's (Focusing more on BLEs than palms):
$350 minimum order
$60 phyto
20% handling charge/plant
shipping costs

Plant Delights (Offering a larger selection of palms):
$100 minimum order
$75 phyto
$5 handling charge/plant
shipping costs

So if you took a plant like a needle palm, which is available on both websites, it would work out like this:

Woodlander's: Available in a 1 gallon pot for $18. Add a 20% handling charge and the total would be $21.60.
PD: Available in a 24 fluid ounces pot (around 1/5 gallon) for $20. Add a $5 handling charge and the total would be $25.

I've never actually paid any fees either time, maybe they just didn't notice for some reason!

PDN does have some great companion plants to palms as well: many varieties of agaves, canna and colocasia, hedychiums, musa/musella, tetrapanax (rice paper plant), yucca, etc. One that I especially want to try is Zingiber mioga, a zone 6 hardy ginger! :D

I didn't pay import fees either.
Customs probably figured out quickly that stuff isn't available here.

There was tax though, only GST in those days...now likely 12% HST (and Ontario's is 13%)

I'm going to place the order on March 31st, so I'll need to have received everyone's money by March 20th.

If you're interested, please respond to the thread, or PM me!

Getting my list ready...they have so many species that I've wanted for ages...

Here's their online catalogue (alphabetical listings) 60+ pages... :bounce:
http://www.plantdelights.com/searchprods.asp

Thanks a bunch for organizing this, Cameron. :sunny:

Please advise whether one phyto will be issued per species, or per person order? or hopefully one phyto for the entire group order?

Barb

EDIT: catalogue is 77 pages, and not listed alphabetically.

Barb

Im pretty sure, the certificate is per order. Whether that order is 50 boxes, or 1. CITIES ( for animals), is different, and you need one for every species ( if i remember right, its been a while since ive had to deal with it). The best thing is to make sure its once order, not concidered multiple. This save a lot of pain ( except for cameron LOL)

So far i have my eyes on zingiber miooga, and sabal mcurtain

I think all of us south of the border are interested in what you folks will order.

Did any of you call Phil at Jungle Music to ask if he would make an exception to his "no international shipping" rule?

I have been buying palms from him as he ships in 5 gallon sizes, which I prefer to the band size. For the cost and hassle, I like to get a big palm. I also like that I deal directly with him, whether by email or telephone. And he calls to make sure his babies are doing well--it makes it personal. --Erik

The only problem I can see with that, is pakages are shipped by weight. A box of 5 gallon palms woudl weigh what, 100 pounds?? And box sizxe as well. That could run 100+ bucks Just for shipping.

I will have to say, ive drooled on Junglemusics home page for a while now LOL

Yes we've contacted Phil @ Jungle Music.
He has no experience with phytosanitary certs and most of his prices start at $30.00.

Plant Delights Nursery has some outstanding products too, especially like the varieties of Yucca, which Phil doesn't stock.

I'm glad you tried.
Phil does internal US phyto certs, but the "passports" are another thing altogether. He is really a hobbyist (semi-retired physician) who is crazy about palms. PDN is a big business by comparison.

I am still planning on ordering from PDN this year, so this "group order" option will still be available :D

A member of another board who lives in Ontario had set up his own order from PDN in the summer, but had to cancel it due to the summer heat. However, he informed me that PDN no longer charges the $5/plant handling fee for Canadian orders!! I have not confirmed this yet with PDN, but if it's true, it will greatly reduce everyone's costs for this order!

For those that are interested, I think that I will be placing the order during the first week of April. This means that I'll need your orders and $ by April 5th, 2012. Start looking through their website!

Hi Cameron,
I'll "pass" for '12, but thanks.

Their catalogue by common plant name is here: http://www.plantdelights.com/Buy-Plants ... roducts/3/.
I found browsing easier that way.

The author's (Tony) humour is fall-off-your-chair hilarious.
For an example, look up what he writes in the first sentence under Mazari palm, Nannorhops ritchiana.

I don't recall being charged $5 per plant when I placed my y.rostrata order at PDN years ago.
The really pricey thing was the phyto certificate

Thanks!
Barb

I used to browse by the common name, but over time it became easier to look at scientific names  It's likely that I'll be ordering from 3 or 4 nurseries in the US this year, and unfortunately, each order will need its own phytosanitary certificate

Cam et al. I am ordering a large quantity of bamboo from a few nurseries down south. The plan is to have it shipped to Niagara Falls, NY, then drive down to pick it up. The order will have a phyto AND this way I can avoid having the plants delayed at the border (as I've heard is common). If anyone wants to piggy back, let me know in a PM.
