Here is a picture of the Serona repens (green form) it is different from other Saw Palmettos I have seen because it dose'nt have thorns on the palm fronds. Please excuse the poor picture quality as it was taken w/ my video camera.

I have some Trachycarpus fortunei seeds but They are from last February so I don't know how good they are. I would be willing to trade and if they didn't work out for you I can send you some more in Feb 2008.

I also have to send some to Wes in Kansas but I have hundreds coming. The crop for next Feb is going to be my largest ever. They are getting harder to get though as they are 15 to 18 feet above the ground.

Seeds

I guess 20 would be good enough for me. I have a small residential lot so I don't have much space to plant. I would like to try to give them a go though. Send me a PM w/ your address and I'll get them out to you ASAP.

Dwarf Palmetto (Sabal minor) not Saw Palmetto(Serona repens)

Post by Dean W. » Mon Oct 01, 2007 4:33 pm

Sorry,

I just found out I've been calling this plant by the wrong name. Its Sabal minor not Serona repens. Wes if your still open to trade let me know. Sorry about the confusion.

A two day soak and into the converted aquarium :D
Yours should be running at 85* - 95*F? Just keep it unplugged at night, the temp. variation seems to speed these up.

Those temps sound about right. I've been leaving mine plugged in 24/7. Problem is, I have more seeeds than germination space.

I had some problems w/ the Dypsis decaryi, Dypsis lutescens, and Arenga engleri seeds that we talked about. So I cleaned them w/ a toothbrush first. Days later the mildew came back, so a few days ago I sprayed w/ fungicide.

I thought the Sabal minor seed would require stratification. Look here http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result ... lant=SAMI8 . So I planted some outside in a community pot.

I'm glad I did a good job cleaning the Serona repens.

I don't think stratification is really necessary with the Sabals, around a 20* difference between night/day temps. during germination seems to be all that is required.

Let me know how using the fungicide works out, every time I've germinated Arenga in the past it seemed to take forever....... I'm usually ready to toss them, and then they all germinate at once :D

Not sure if you have seen this , RPS has an archive page for germination experiences which can be helpful.
