Hi all,
Some more pictures from the great white north. Zone 4b, near Kingston, Ontario.

Low this winter was -32Cish, -25Fish. Lots of days below -20C, hardest winter we've had since the 1990's, or perhaps the 2002 winter where we hit the same temp without snow cover...

Lots of losses, too many to list. Including 2 Southern Magnolias, my 5 year old willow leaf oak, and a few Rhodo's...

Here are some pictures:
Ilex pendunculosa, looked good until it came time to grow... Killed almost to the ground. Damn.

Fargesia nitida took a beating. It's supposed to be zone 5 plant too!


Rhododendron 'Holden's spring herald' (R. catawbiense x rex)


Phyllostachys aureosulcata ssp. spectibilis is recovering well.


Rhododendron 'Sandra Hinton' on the left, what a great plant! Hardy as they come and big leaves!

Petasites is SO invasive, but it gets huge leaves, they get to twice this size, I just need a more boggy spot for it!

My rufa is toast... is completely dead as far as I know.... But the alata came through strong!

I'm pretty dissappointed with the Ilex pendunculosa truth be told. The Yuccas are fantastic and so are the cacti.

Jesse, if I were you I'd see if I could find a Heptacodium, the thing doesn't seem to get damaged and is very tropical looking. Good on the alata, I think my rufa is fine, but it was buried in snow all winter (I have it planted in the woods, so I always forget to check it!)

Paul... that's a huge garden you have ... most impressive. Your hybrid Rhododendrons look really healthy. Arid bed looks good also.

That heptacodium is interesting. The flowers look like jasmine. Dont think its available down here but Ill keep an eye open now!

A few weeks after my post on here and still nothing from the rufa. The alata has already leafed out, so I think its time to call it. RIP Rufa. I do however have a few seedlings of Phyllostachys heteroclada, the "Water bamboo" with the hollow cavities in the rhizomes. Another Phyllo that is said to take -25C tp -30C. There isnt much info out there though. Also have my new nitida.

You manage to get any of the Kalo seeds to sproud despite the mold?

Did you protect your yucca elatas and the gloriosa? My elata died this winter.

No kalopanex germinated.

Some yucca were 'protected' by tying the leaves into points so that they could resist the weight of the harsh snow! No protection from low temps.

great update...............that Rhododendron maximum x calophytum is a beauty! I'm glad it took that cold winter with no issues.
