Southern magnolia dropping most leaves. What to do?

Post by Jova » Wed Apr 09, 2014 3:06 pm

Zone 6 southern indiana. My magnolia has been in the ground four years now. This year I decided to not use a burlap windscreen over the winter as I have done for the last few years, and of course, we ended up having the worst winter in decades. As of today, about 90% of the leaves are completely brown and are dropping like crazy. The tree seems to be completely alive, is green under the bark and still growing as normal. I just wanted to know if there are any measures I should take since its dropping WAY more leaves this spring than normal. Thanks in advance!

as long as the buds arent mushy, black or falling off you should be ok. Im not too familiar with mags but the buds should still have some green. Bamboo can loose all its leaves and still leaf back out (yes I know they are different plants :P )

If the stems still have some flex then the tree is probably OK, if they're brittle, you've got stem kill. So mag's are like pines in that they can look good for a long time while actually being dead!
