Crooked Basjoo plant and corm

Post by canadianplant » Thu Sep 12, 2013 6:32 am

I planted my Basjoo this year and within a week or 2 I realized I didnt plant it deep enough in the pot or the soil finally settled. Either way, I had to bury it a bit deeper in soil.

What seemed to have happened is that the plant ended up leaning having half the corm buried deep and half of it somewhat exposed. The exposed side has a pup a few inches away from the mom, whole the deep side has a nice large pup close to the mom.

What I plan on doing is to remove the sucker that is on the shallow side of the corm for insurance. I will then add more soil to the shallow side and leave the mom and other pip in the ground for the winter using the wire cage method that seems to work the best.

My question is there a chance that if the side that is more shallow gets damaged will the side that is deeper survive? Is it possible for half a corm to survive and thrive? I am hoping that even if the main corm dies the large pup will have enough roots and corm to live.

Here is my banana corm separation method.
With a sharp blade, sever the pup from the mother. Cut through ONLY HALF WAY Through. Wait two weeks for it to send down more of its own roots (or up to a month, but sever 1/3 then 2/3 after the first two weeks). This also gives the cut to heal closed.
After your two weeks or month have passed, finish the cut, careful to avoid as many healthy roots as possible.
When it gets transplanted, try to give it ideal conditions perhaps even heat from below to encourage faster root growth.

Here is my misi luki pup ten days after the process (2 week method) ...

Looking a little limp, I may choose soon to cut all but the first two leaves, to make pushing new ones easier. This was a big pup (2 foot tall, from a ten foot mom)!
