Backyard Musas flowering earlier this year! WooHoo!

They're already well over 9 to 10 feet tall and already flowering. They waited until September to flower last year! Wow!

Nice Mike,you should get to see the whole process
since its so early,to bad they are not edible but I believe
they have a very beautiful flower..for a banana plant

Hey Paul,

I cut back hip height in November after first freeze and then cage with chicken wire and throw in lotsa straw, cover with plastic and leave the top open for air and sun on winter days. The only time I leave the top on is at night or if it goes below high 20's. We only had a few nights in teens this year. I then open them back up first week Aoril last week March after freeze is past. Here's a pic

Wow that's too cool! They've grown like mad - I can tell where you cut them back - and doubled their heighth! What do you feed them? We've had lotsa water but not much sun, not typical for us, but it's been a nice change. I think my basjoos have put on 3-4 leaves so I'm waaaay behind.

Looks great Mike. I am hoping my Musa Basjoo will flower this year. It has not in the past but it is about 8 feet tall so far. The lack of sun so far has slowed growth. Did you get lots of sun this spring?

Hey all,
The spring started off cool and cloudy. These are the same plants that I posted about because they looked yellow and deformed for the first month. They took off from there. I don't really feed them anything, just water alot. We have had a few days in the 90's and normal amounts of sun, but nothing out of the ordinary. I was able to open them fairly often int he winter to breathe though. They kept pushing up small leaves even in winter when opened. The plants in my front yard ere even bigger. I hope one of them blooms also.

Quick question; What temp do your basjoos usually start to grow? I want to throw mine outside and the nights are not projected to go below 7C. I know they can take cool temps, but "cool" to some can be 2C........

We don't usually go below 32 F /0 C at night after Mid March I usually keep them open but don't necessarily unwrap them totally until end MArch First week April. They really start growing as soon as I unwrap them even if temps are in the 40's and 50's at night in April.

Wow that is awesome! I hope to try that here. We had temps at night in the low 30s just a couple weeks ago - so i wouldn't get that kinda growth this soon. I have overwintered basjoos before but they died to the ground even with a similar setup as you have. I kept it closed up all winter though.
Do you leave open even in the rain or snow?

Hey Paul, NO I definitely keep them covered and free from any mositure! That is the key I think in the colder temps! When you are ready to overwinter afteer summer is over, PM me on here and I will give you the exact steps with pics of each step as I do it. MAy work for you too!
