Tetrapanex protected

Post by TimMAz6 » Fri Dec 28, 2012 11:14 pm

I finally got to protect my Tetrapanex trunk. I removed the temporary protection and constructed this which has a string of small christmas lights. I hope it works. Note the Cycad is mostly green still with alow of 20F. We hit 19F after......I'll have to recheck to see if it's still green. I need to still protect the half dead Wollemi, Cycad and Citrumelo.

Some serious Tetrapanex love!

Hope it make it Tim,they are such cool plants...kind of an uptown Castor bean :D

After seeing Bill's I decided to bring a couple inside for the winter, they are somehow
maintaining a few leaves in a south window-looking forward to(hopefully)having
a few that are bigger than knee high.

this is the second winter for the Tetrapanex...........last winter I did not protect much except for a deep layer of leaves. The trunk died above the leaves and was OK below the leaves.

No remote temperature probe in the Tetrapanex protection.......only time will tell. The 30 day forecast looks good with a low of 7F and the coldest day high of 19F.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

only the top 6" of trunk died......and that portion of the trunk was sticking out of the leaves!! The trunk must be zone 7b hardy (at least for short durations). 8)

Mine have grown bigger than ever this year after sprouting this spring.

I think the competition of other plants so close is stretching them out.

I am ready to explore the world of tetrapanex...What is the best way to grow? Should I buy seeds or plants online? How quickly do they take off if grown from seed??

Thanks,
mike

Hey Jim......that orange was a Poncirus trifoliata.....nice test for your area.....especially this year! 8)

Hey Mike......if you find Tetrapanax seed let me know.....that would be cool to grow from seed. But I'd get an offshoot from the mother plant. If you can't find one let me know and in summer I'm sure I'll have a few more pups..........unless this brutal winter kills it!

Thanks,
