Mild winter temperatures equate to plants looking good, some of them even growing!
Building never gets below 4C 39F but sunny days sure increase the temp.
Uninsulated waterlines are drained in winter, but I have buckets of water stored for sparse waterings.

Barb that jade tree impresses me every time i see it

7-11 called, they want their Big Gulp cups returned. WOW , that's alot of plants. Apparently you know what you are doing because everything looks good.

Barb, my library is ashamed of your cold building How big a space is (in square meters)?

Approx. 111 sq m

It's 40 feet x 30 feet, 1200 square feet.
Thankfully Google does calculations!

Lots of room inside for more...but once they go outside on the patio, there's not much room for chairs

Jim, they look fairly robust but obviously not a fast grower IMO.
But I haven't babied them either.

Your little princeps looked better than mine last year.

Tim, by the way, I wanted to say thanks for talking me into saving my Cordylines and not treating them as annuals.
Those 3 Red Star (erroneously called Red Flag by me earlier) look happy in the cold building.
Can't wait to see what they do this summer, i.e. flower????

I thought thats what those were-thats why I asked
They have deep root systems so those are the right pots!


They look great-at that stage you should see some divided leaves this summer....
they speed up as soon as the leaves divide....usually the 4-5th leaf starts this.
I usually get 4-5 leaves per spring/summer/fall.

They like heat and in my opinion preform best @60- low 90s(F)

12-31-2011 this palm had spear-pulled along with a few others from having
what was supposed to be Neem oil from Wal-mart.....sprayed on them.

Turned out it has .001% Neem and the rest was vegetable oil that turned rancid
and caused spear-pull in all but the largest palms!

Heavily damaged and losing all it's leaves it may have recovered but I pulled it and replaced with a healthy one.
This one pulled too-from .53" rain and 14F within a few days-shouldn't have happened as the forecast was for 23-25F!!!

Oct 3 2011,still looks good today.
I have replaced the styrofoam rose cover for an Umbrella G-house to raise temps
and keep the humidity down....
This is a nice palm and I would love to see it recover next spring!

I'm impressed with BOTH the growth of princeps in the pot, and then in the ground, in only one season!

BTW my 3 little princeps are in the ice cream bucket (not those tall cups...those are C.humilis).

They'll be happy here then as our blast furnace summer temps keep me hopping, watering everything in a pot.

I now wish I had brought them to the warm house for winter, instead of the cold building.
Probably would've liked a really warm winter temp?...

Figuring out that Neem Oil damage was infuriating for me too...I think I also put it on the Nainital BEFORE I put on Freeze-Pruf. Double whammy. RIP palm!
You said you replaced yours...so did the first one die? or did you rehabilitate it in a pot?

General info on oil/plants:
Actually orchardists use dormant oil, here's the details from H.
"True dormant oil (the good, proper stuff) mixes with water. And dormant oil doesn't go rancid and rot things.
You stir it into water, then let it sit for a minute and it turns whitish, like thin skim milk, then it's ready to spray on plant and it suffocates bug eggs.
If it separates after trying to mix it (oil stays on top, with water separated below), don't use it on plants because it's crap, probably just vegetable oil."

I hope princeps' spears don't pull as easily as you appear to say they do...
but that rainfall/freezing temps would do any young palm in.

Your newly planted princeps is as beautiful as any I've seen.
Bet those new fronds look even more blue in bright sun.

I don't recall what I did with the 1st Princeps...
I took a few things out,some I planted and some potted up.

I hope this one make it.
It has a bunch of leaves on it and if it
stays healthy should grow out of it fine.



I have 2 small ones from Garry,
the other 3 including the one planted
are from Steve in Alabama.

After all, I lost the Nainital race to you...
