New Fronds

Post by Knnn » Wed Oct 28, 2009 8:05 am

Just some new fronds opening up, how is everybody else's palms doing?

Phoenix roebelenii, these started taking off as soon as they were moved into the GH.

Looking good Steve! What temperature do you keep your greenhouse?

Thanks Bill, I try to keep the lows around 45F. Last winter saw a dip to 30F, we had a cold snap lasting a week with lows down to -7F. (added a lot more insulation this year

Daytime temps vary, a sunny day will usually give me at least a 30F rise above ambient.

Excellent Steve. I like how that Pygmy date palm and the others are doing.I gave up on PDP a couple of years ago. Maybe I would try them again if I had a greenhouse like yours instead of the Palm garage every winter.

John, For me, the Pygmy Dates' always seem to do better once inside. Between October & February they are pretty much growing non stop. Have you tried overwintering any in the house? Maybe too chilly for them in the garage?

Kent, I like your avatar, is that a Golden Malayan?
Those were the easiest photos for me to take, things are crowded in the GH

yes, golden malayan. I gave it to my sister this October. They have a bank of windows on the west side of their house and I just thought that would be great for the coco for winter. She agreed to take care of it and she has a green thumb.

Bill, Will have to look around a bit, the Bismarckia was started from seed about 4-5 years ago.

I've been trying to shift more of my attention to the understory & slower growing species.
(to save on space, but I know I'll need therapy, or a move to a zone 9 climate sooner or later

This Coccothrinax litoralis is going on six years from seed.

Very cool, it must be fun watching them grow over the years. Zone 9 what would the challenge be there?

The challenge in a 9 would be growing zone 10 & 11 plants
Hoping to at least buy a couple acres in So. TX someday, (or a similar climate), just to be able to put a few of these in ground.

Rio Grande Valley

Post by tropicman » Sat Oct 31, 2009 10:37 pm

Had my son look for some land down there in Texas for me when I retire,he said if you could find land for sale, small plot now will sale $200,000.
It's what they call the Texas Riviera.
He said cross the border, and we could get more the buck there!
Neighbor a block or two around the corner from me said he sold his house and bought one in Panama, said it was the fourth
best sought after retirement tropical area, and your money would go a lot further as well.

I've been to Panama, talk about tropical! I don't think you can find a plant that would die from cold there. Maybe one! LOL...

Steve your Majesty must be the only healthy one in captivity.
So many beautiful specimens in that GH.

You guys...if you're moving to a zone 9, take me with you
Don't know if I could tolerate mowing lawns 12 mos a year, but am willing to try. 8)
