How is the summer treating you?

Post by oppalm » Mon Jul 13, 2009 7:10 am

Just a couple of palm related pictures of my backyard oasis. Most everything seems to be growing very well so far this summer. We've had plenty of rain and lots of heat, which is great for palms and bananas and tropicals (but you knew that).

The first pic shows a coconut on the left and a wodyetia bifurcata (foxtail) on the right. Got some other stuff there but you can't see it (sorry). The foxtail is about 8' tall and has new frond about to open. The foxtail has proven to be very easy to keep inside during winter: i.e no pests , no diseases and pretty much maintenance free, except for watering. I have had the foxtail since August 2006. Its grown about 5' in 3 years.
The coconut continues to grow , throws out 2-3 fronds each year. I have had it since March 2006. It always looks a little rough in the spring time, but greens up nicely outside after a couple of months.

This pic shows some bananas and palm trees that surround the back side of the pond. The big one in the middle is a 10' queen. I've had the queen palm 3 years and its doubled in size. I'll get better pics of the palms that surround the pond.

How's your palms ? and post some pics please. Lets see what you're doing.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Wes - if you make it to KC , let me know.

Steve - I use any container I can get my hands on also. I just so happened to buy some nice pots many years ago at a garage sale. In fact I keep an eye on garage sales for planting containers (obsessive). I dig alot of plants up in the fall and overwinter inside in trash cans, laundry tubs, coffee containers, trash cans, yogurt tubs, plastic containers , etc. whatever it takes to get the job done. I'm also jealous of your trunking phx roebelinii. Love the look. I have 2 of these and am patiently awaitng the trunk. It may never happen, I may buy a nice trunking one next spring. Both of mine seem to overwinter inside with no problems and average light.

Anybody have more pictures of their palm trees this summer ??

This pic is of my washington robusta (mexican fan palm) on the back side of my pond. It probably needs to be repotted, but I am trying to keep its size in check as I find them very very easy to overwrinter inside. This one is about 3 years old, I bought it as a very small 1 gallon plant.

Kent, Looks like everything has been enjoying the summer!

Off topic here, but what kind of pump are you using in your pond? Do yours last more than a year?
I bought what I thought was a better quality one last time, it lasted a year before the impeller fell off yesterday.............lol

The last one I bought in 2007 was from Harbor Freight. Bought it online for like $50. It pushes about 1300 gallons per hour. You can see them online. I recommend if you want to buy one to call the 1-800 number and then you can buy a 2 year warranty for like $4. Can't get the warranty if you order online, you actually have to call and ask for it. I am very happy with this pump. I have paid 4 times as much for a pump that last 2 years.

Kent, Thanks for the info! There's a store in Salina, going to see what they have in stock.
