That looks like a great place to visit John, especially in the middle of winter. All the parrots are really cool too, nice tropical touch.

Beautiful pics John, thanks.

I hear they're short of money to maintain it...
Lay off a few bureaucrats or don't let politicians buy new office furniture...the conservatory is more important!

So there... :x

They're shutting it down!

Post by lucky1 » Thu Nov 26, 2009 5:00 pm

I'm stunned.

the Vancouver Parks Board has voted to shut down the Bloedel Conservatory...too expensive!
How many parks board directors do they need?
Reduce to one, and put the rest of the money into the conservatory.

It is a crappy decision. How the hell do other cities keep their conservatories running. I wonder what they are going to do with all the plants and birds. This part they have not mentioned.

How do you close a place like that down?
Stop feeding the parrots, stop watering the plants?
I know George Bush spent all our money here in the states, didn't know he spent yours too!

Here`s the kicker the six parks board members that voted to shut it down are in line for a 4% raise 2010. That exceeds the amount it would take to keep the conservatory running . GREED!

Jeez, I doubt I could afford to buy ANY of those valuable plants if they had a humongous sale...or a parrot for that matter.

But I might have a few sheckles for part of their conservatory ROOF...hmmmmm.

I'd give my teeth for a conservatory...a real one you can stand up in and go for a walk in, bigger than a house.
Dreams only!

Glad the conservatory won't be dismantled and removed (you were maybe hoping ?????)

Beautiful facility, must be fun with the parrots flying around those exotic plant specimens.

Strange that Veitchia label was wired to the palm

The outdoors Trachies have sure grown, but some look pretty ragged.
Maybe from last winter?

Thanks for posting the pics, John.

I hope they manage to keep it open too. Does anyone know the status of it at the moment? It would be a real shame to let it go. I have fond memories of visiting it when I was a kid. Instead of shuting it down they should upgrade it and build more of them!

Hi Vicbowling! Welcome to the forum.

I think the Parks Department said they would review "the situation" again in April.

I agree with John's comment:
keep it open private or public
Like anything to do with government, there are lots of things they can cut BEFORE they close down a prize like the Conservatory...
residents can see to that! A few letters to the editor should do it.

The squeeky wheel will get the grease. I hope all the palm loving people shout long enough to reverse any decision to close this gem. Vicbowling I have been to La Casa resort a few times. Seems with a name like that the only thing missing are some palm trees. If you are interested in purchasing palm trees pm. me.
