Greetings from Kansas!

Post by personalparadise » Sun Nov 21, 2010 8:17 pm

I just wanted to introduce myself. I grew up in Kansas, but got into palms when I lived in San Antonio Texas. Now that I am back in Kansas I am working to continue my passion for my unusual plants! My majesty palm and my new bamboo palm juveniles are the ones that survived the trip so looking to rebuild my collection.

any suggestion on a Palm that survives around here, western Kansas (other then yuccas) let me know!

Welcome from Oklahoma!

San Antonio was indeed a fine place for palms.

I grow palms in NE Oklahoma. It is a challenge, and I concede western Kansas (where?) will be harder, but we have several members from Kansas who can help you.

Overall, the easiest plan is to grow palms in pots and bring them in for the winter. If you want to grow palms in the ground, your best bets are dwarf palmetto (Sabal minor) and needle palm (Rhapidophyllum hystrx). The first is native to Texas and into Oklahoma but hard to find in stores. Needle palms might be at your local Home Depot, or you can ask them to order for you.

Even those species will need some form of protection for winter where you are.

Thanks for some ideas. I already know that I am not going to be able to have them in the ground and survive more then 2 or 3 winters without extensive protection (Living in Garden City, by the way, already had frost several times). Right now they are inside for this winter, but I am hoping by next winter I will have a large atrium so they will have a better microclimate.

welcome personalparadise (extending secret Kansas handshake). Garden City is along way from me, I live near Kansas City on the eastern border of the state. I grow several cold hardy palms outside (all with protection) and have an abundance of indoor palms also. Welcome back to Kansas , we like to see pictures of palm trees and try to be very helpful if you have questions or palm tree problems. Good luck to all your palms.
Kent in Kansas
where it's cold in winter (always)
and hot in summer (usually)

Here is some of my babies sitting outside so they can be treated for pests before it gets any colder

My bamboo palm juveniles (supposedly). They were an awesome find at walmart 2 months ago, only $1.25 for the pot and palms, I just had to try them

And my start to my obsession, my fickle Majesty Palm. It has lost alot of it's beauty since the stress of the move and coupled with the fact that it picked up scales at some point (I am still working on treating it, I hate those buggers, I think they are what did in the rest of my palms before I even knew what they were.)

so they can be treated for pests
Because most are still small, you could even dip a cloth into hydrogen peroxide in water and gently rub on leaves, using a Q-tip for hard to reach areas, paying special attention to undersides where bugs like to live.
nice pic...thankful to see some sun!
I just wash the outside of pots and both sides of saucers with bleach/water.
Works well.

oooh, scales on the Majesty? that takes some work.
maybe move it away from your other plants.

Great price on your bamboo palms, that's so cheap... :D great clumping habit, grow super fast outdoors in summer.
Mine's in morning sun all summer, likes lots of water.
My C.seifrizii flowers 3 times each summer.
