my yucca collection 2014

Post by Edmar » Fri Jul 11, 2014 10:24 am

Greetings to all yucca lovers! this is my first post even though I've been a member for a little while I didn't have much to share nor the time to do it but I'm glad I can do it now :)
let's start with my biggest yucca, it is yucca filamentosa that's been proven very hardy to my climate, zone 5 (more like zone 4a); this past winter was extremely cold but it survived covered in snow for many months (nights of -16F in average)
Image
as you can see it is flowering as of now with 2 stalks of flowers, I think I could save some pollen for future experiments...

Here are the before and after pics of a small "rock garden" style that I made for my yuccas that I grew from seed

closeups of my plants which includes: yucca rostrata(3), baccata(3), glauca (3), sempervivums and a few blue fescues from a division

yucca rostrata 9 months old

this little glauca is barely more than 6 months old but has already 2 suckers?

Image

the same for this glauca in a pot with a sucker

the following are pics of other small yuccas in another part of my garden
Yucca baccata 9 months old

one of my 2 yuccas "color guard" growing new rosettes, I had to trim it from all her rosettes after spring because of damage

here it is after winter in a pot

my second yucca filamentosa "color guard" in a pot

this little filamentosa survived this past winter with only 2 rosettes and 3 microscopic roots

thank you for your time, I'll be posting more pics as summer progresses including my yuccas "elata X filamentosa" hybrids that are just beginning to sprout!

Hello Andy and thanks.....my 2 "colorguard" spent last winter buried in the ground with their pots, I bought them too late to be put directly in the ground but hey they survived covered in snow all winter long, from what I have read it's hard to kill a filamentosa even the variegated types hehe :D

Fantastic landscaping. 8) That just how it should be done! The rocks look natural, the yuccas are up high, nice job. :D

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

hello Jim and thanks :) I think I got better than normal growth because my seedlings were under the grow lights (fluorescent 6500k),14-16 hours/day and a big fan constantly blowing their way, that rostrata was put into a bigger pot right from the start and grew better than the others :D

Thank you Tim, maybe some day I could have a really nice garden like yours with trunking yuccas, it is my dream to have at least one tree yucca that's why I'm putting all my hopes in my recently germinated "elata X filamentosa" hybrid hoping that it could withstand my cold winters just as my filamentosa does, my young rostratas may not make it trough this winter even with winter protection but I'm keeping a backup of 6 plants in pots just in case :D
