Nothing much; just some leftover HGH from some NFL teams.

Nah, when I planted it, I amended the soil with miracle grow potting soil and gravel and used some miracle grow fertilizer (minimal).

My first Yucca garden

Post by unartis » Sat Dec 05, 2015 8:24 am

Hello,

has just signed up, welcome everyone.
Quite like the narrow-leafed yucca. I have some yucca

I collect hardy Mediterranean plants and hardy cactuses, yuccas, agaves and other semi-arid drought-tolerant plants.
a few years ago I used to sow seed of winter-hardy plants, especially yucca seeds.
I test small plants in my garden in the winters.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Photo Updates

Been awhile since ive uploaded new photos of my Brevifolia and Rostrata. My rostrata suffered some aphids and possible a little scale this spring, hence the irregular growth. With some quick action, I think its recovered nicely. The trunk is getting fairly large on it. The brevifolia is growing nicely and starting to curve (possibly branching soon?). If your yuccas ever suffer pests, be sure and spray the new growth with heavy water daily to wash away the pests. That and some Seven did the trick for me.

Here is an updated pic of my rostrata. I trimmed it today but noticed the plant seems a little "loose" and doesnt seem like it firmly in the ground. Anyone think it may have root rot. It is a little yellow but I don't know if thats just some winter frost that has done that or what.

Anyone have a rostrata and can you tell me if its very firm in the ground or does it have some movement? If so how much? Anyone have any pointers?

Does rostrata have a tap root or just a root ball? Maybe pull it out of ground to inspect roots or at least expose the roots to inspect?

Thank you!

Hi Bato... your Rostrata is growing well from its original planting. The plant looks healthy so if you have root issues it would normally show on the head.
The pic you have shown looks like a summer pic as the grass is parched? As far as I know Rostratas just have rootballs The plant should be solid in the ground. I have a 7ft plant and it is rock solid despite wet soil. I'd post a pic of mine but the file is too large :? Most forums automatically adjust??

Thanks for the reply. I just took this photo yesterday; grass is yellow from winter.

I did call the nursery where I purchased the rostrata and she made a good point: it may be loose because those leaves that I just trimmed were actually adding some structural stability to the plant. Makes sense. She said it wouldn't hurt it to dig it up to check the root ball and adjust the plant as it is growing at an angle you cant see in the photo. I will straighten it up, inspect the roots, and add some gravel around the base as the nursery instructed to reinforce it as it learns to support itself without the leaves supporting it. The rostrata is a little yellow but in years past it does yellow a bit from the winter and does green up as the warmer months continue.

I have heard from a colleague on another forum saying his rostrata was growing well with just one strong root when it was moved. As you can see from the pic above it looks ok but I have had problems with a Yucca rostrata x rigida hybrid. Can only think it is a moisture issue as my lowest temp all Winter was -7C.

Never seen this condition on a Yucca before but it looks like rot in the head.
