I was just looking at the roots of the Yucca you just dug up. Is this the 'unknown' Yucca? The roots are not of filamentosa or flaccida. The roots are more like a western Yucca like glauca or elata........but the leaves are wide unlike glauca or elata. I bet you have a form of Y. arkansana.
Yup - this is one of my unknown yuccas! I have a feeling you solved the mystery, but we need to wait until it blooms to be sure :)

marceli, the unknown yucca wants that plastic hole fixed

If it gets a lot colder, will you add heat inside?

LOL survival of the fittest!

They look good and dry. The only thing I wouldve done extra was toss some mulch around the plants, but thats me

Any advice is appreciated. What do you suggest for mulching? I have plenty of pine twigs and straw available.

Straw works, so do leaves. The only thing I can see against using mulch, is that it will cover the rocks, which might act as a heat sink....

You'd have to fix that hole for sure, Marceli because mice like to live in mulch.

I would do nothing. Marceli, nice protection and since the grass is green everything is gonna be alright. I have my potted different yucca plants in a GH after minus 27 C. The things are frozen and will have been looking awful until March I guess. Yours look like the Miss of the Universe!

Mine protection looks very ugly in the season though. Unfortunately it's too big to remove it in spring and build again

I checked for a root and found none, so you're right Tim :D I reversed it and buried the root, so I hope it will be growing downwards ;)

yes.......the first growth out of the Yucca seed is the root and perhaps a week later you will see signs of the first leaf.

Too late, Tim. When I spotted it, buried the root immediately. Next time I won't touch it and see what happens. Plates break to pieces when they touch the floor, so it seems I do have a gravity

Someone will figure it out, marceli.

Reminds me of what happened to my unknown plant (yucca / agave ?)

From this photo, look at the bottom drain hole.
The tiny green shoot (which should be coming out the top as a pup) is growing DOWN.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8091850572/" title="012 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8335/8091 ... d3ce_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="012"></a>

Here's what it looked like when I separated it from the mother from the other pups:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8091840873/" title="016 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8050/8091 ... 0972_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="016"></a>

The other pups were fine, coming out the top:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8091842779/" title="014 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8043/8091 ... b62c_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="014"></a>

Weird, huh?

I would guess it was in a humid condition like under plastic? Because the air was high in humidity, the root grew up?

Not a bad guess Aaron, Ive had this happen to yucca, as well as some Canna and some others that have escaped my memory. I do remember that they were all not buried deeply enough, and were in a container with high humidity.

that Y. filata #5 seedling is germinating 'normal'...........I'm glad to see them growing. That Y. filata #5 is the best looking filata in my garden since it looks great in spring, summer, winter and fall. Many Yuccas look awful in spring after winter.
