Tim, apart from the bacata--and some squishing from snowload--I think everything looks great after winter.
Really impressed with the elata crosses and rostratas.

Would I be generalizing too much if I think fleshy yuccas don't do as well as waxy-coated yuccas?

Must've been wonderful removing the covers!
Good work this winter Tim...another foot of snow though and the load would've been too much?

You have the most yucca varieties I've ever seen :notworthy:

thanks everyone,

the Yuccas which generally can't survive here are the tall trunkers from the southwest. The only trunkers which can survive here are Y. elata, Y. thompsoniana and Y. rostrata. Y. whippeli can't survive either.

I hope to hybridize some more Yuccas but I'm at the mercy of the beetles which kill off the flowers. I'd have loads of hybrids if it wasn't for those beetles.

Hey Tim
Would placing a brown paper bag over the flower spathe keep beetles out?
Although it would be tough to attach it tightly enough to keep beetles out without choking the stem.

Hi Barb,

bags didn't work. I think I may purchase some sort of fine netting......or MOVE.

<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... uly111.jpg>

Hi Cameron,

the collection gets larger and larger every season....especially with hybrids.

Tim,
Look at the height of those flower spikes!

Wouldn't the trick be to tie the bags shut at the bottom?

Hi Barb,

I'm curious if you have these beetles in your area? There can be 20+ beetles in a single flower sometimes.

Tim,
Thanks for that pic.

I've never seen anything that even resembles that beetle.
Kinda like a ladybug with a big head?

Will peer inside flowers this year.

Wouldn't those beetles be the natural pollinators?
Or do we know they're pests that damage the yucca?

The beetles do a lot of damage because they lay larvae in the flower and they larvae eat the pistol and other flower parts. The blooms typically fall off prematurely.

Thanks for those great photos Tim.

I've never seen the yucca moths here either :?

Too bad they get along with the beetles.

So the beetles affect pollination because the flowers fall off prematurely?
What's the beetle called anyway?

Wow :D -man your yard is too cool, Tim! Thanks for the update pics.

I didn't know there would be a yucca moth in your neck of the woods Tim, as I didn't think you had an endemic yucca species....very cool. I really love those filimentosa-elata hybrids. Can't wait till mine get bigger-although they probably never will in this God forsaken climate :crybaby: ...... . Thanks again-what a collection!

Tim,
that's great! I knew you loved Yucca but had no idea your collection was so big.
They grow well here so I ought to get some. The only one we have now is W's Y. rostrata which she grows in a pot and brings in for winter. --Erik

Hi Barb,

thanks for the Yucca moth/beetle article. The beetles are a big problem in my yard and prevent me from hybridizing yuccas. Some years I'm lucky to get any seeds to develop. I need to find out how to kill the beetles without hurting the flowers or Yucca moths.

The photo didn't show any wings on beetles.
Maybe a sticky petroleum jelly on the flower stems would prevent them crawling up to the flowers.

This is a problem for the scientists!

I know you have tons of yucca flowers but I wonder if there's a way to break the cycle for just one year.
Although your flowers are still lovely and plentiful...but you want to hybridize some.

There must be a fine cloth mesh (like a bridal veil netting) that could be placed over the developing flower spikes, tied at the bottom, to keep the flying beetles out. It's worth a shot.

But then the yucca moths can't get in either

I'm stumped.

I really don't need the Yucca moths......I just don't want to kill them. I need to get my lazy #zz to get some fine netting and protect the blooms!
