Cycad Day 2011

Post by virtualpalm » Thu May 26, 2011 4:32 pm

Dear Fellow Cycad Enthusiasts,

The Cycad Society (TCS) is hosting this year's Cycad Day event at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, FL, on Saturday, June 25th. Pease make plans to attend, and please encourage your friends to come as well (even if they are not members). This Cycad Day will be full of great presentations, good food, and an incredible auction of rare plants, seeds, books, and artwork. It is destined to be one of the best events TCS has ever hosted -- and the only one of its kind in south Florida.

We have created a web page for Cycad Day 2011 information: http://www.cycad.org/cycad-day-2011.htm. On this page is the complete schedule of events as well as a partial listing of some of the items that will be up for auction. Please RSVP to me privately (president@cycad.org) if you plan on attending.

We hope to see you there!

Respectfully yours,

Jody Haynes, President

Cycad Day 2011 Update -- Microcycas raffle

Post by virtualpalm » Mon Jun 13, 2011 5:51 am

Dear Fellow Cycad Enthusiasts:

It is my distinct pleasure to announce a recent and exciting development regarding the Cycad Day 2011 event coming up in two weeks at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, FL, on Saturday, 25 June: the raffle of a Microcycas calocoma seedling!! If you were debating whether or not to attend this event, perhaps the chance of taking home such a rare, sought-after, and exceptional species for the price of a little more than a gallon of gas may just be the reason to push you over the edge! Tickets will be on sale during the event for $5 each (or 6 tickets for $25), with no limit on the number of tickets an individual can buy. The raffle will take place after the auction. You must be present to win.

Check out the Cycad Day 2011 web page on the TCS website for more information on the event, including an updated list of auction items: http://www.cycad.org/cycad-day-2011.htm.

We hope to see you there!

Kindest regards,
Jody

Thanks for the info Jody.

I wish I was going to be down there as I'm a member at Fairchild. There cycad collection is outstanding, as is the rest of the garden!

I love the huge old clump of Dioon Edule they have, I just picked up a beautiful 30 gal specimen in Loxahatchee a few months ago.

Do you have any events during the winter?

Bill

I am writing to provide another update for the Cycad Day 2011 auction that is coming up next Saturday, 25 June, at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, in Coral Gables, FL. The items that have been added are as follows:

1. Several rare and hard-to-find species (both plants and seeds)
2. An 11" x 17" high-resolution print of male Zamia lindenii cones from the cover of the December 2010 issue of the Cycad Newsletter
3. A one-of-a-kind, hard-to-find cycad fossil (section of trunk)
4. A complete set of color back issues of the Cycad Newsletter (2002-present)

We sincerely hope that you will be able to attend and take advantage of the auction as well as the educational presentations and the private guided tour of Fairchild's cycad collection.

See ya there!
Jody
