The Cycad Society, Inc. - Membership Request

Post by virtualpalm » Sun Jan 02, 2011 6:58 am

All,

Happy New Year!

As a New Year’s resolution, would you consider supporting the conservation of cycads around the world?

The Cycad Society (TCS) is dedicated to the conservation of cycads through education and scientific research. We support conservation both through the preservation of naturally occurring cycad populations and the propagation and cultivation of cycads wherever they can be grown.

Two of our most important membership benefits are our quarterly publication, The Cycad Newsletter: Journal of the Cycad Society, and the Cycad Society Seed Bank. Our full color newsletter is filled with information on cycads, from new species descriptions to horticultural tips to travelogues of research and discovery in far-flung habitats. Our seed bank offers, for very reasonable prices, small quantities of many species of cycads, some quite rare, from genera ranging from Bowenia to Zamia.

In addition, TCS sponsors research grants, education projects, and other conservation activities to help insure as many cycads as possible will be around for future generations to enjoy.

Our annual dues are only $35US for members in the USA, and $45US for non-USA memberships. To learn more, please visit our website at http://www.cycad.org.

Happy 2011!

Kindest regards,
Jody Haynes, President
The Cycad Society, Inc.

Happy New Year to you too Jody,

Your fine organization is worth supporting.

And we appreciated the advice you and Tom Broome have provided us here.

You'd laugh at how small my C. debaoensis still are, but they are growing those stunning wavy leaves now.
Thrilled that I started them from seed.

Sending my dues on Monday.
Best regards,
Barb

Jody,

I don't see the treasurer's address:
Is the membership mailing address:

or is that just for the newsletter?

Jody...HELP!

Post by lucky1 » Mon Mar 07, 2011 12:03 pm

Cycas debaoensis 2 plants in trouble.

I started these from seed and don't want to lose them.
Because of scale (and other critters), gave everything a top-dressing of coffee grounds.

After approx 6 mos, may have lost one.
Maybe coffee grounds raised the level too high over the caudex.
And/or pH was so drastically affected...

I remember Tom Broome's advice to "never give up on a cycad", so there's hope?

So...carefully removed all soil, this one had mushy roots from overwatering.
Half the roots were broken, so cut those off keeping what appeared healthy.

<img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5139/550 ... 6c1c_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="DSC04533" />

<img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5292/550 ... dbf050.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSC04534" />

The other one looks better, but in case coffee grounds are too high, repotted that too.
Roots also look better on this guy:

<img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5055/550 ... 9d0278.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSC04535" />

<img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5017/550 ... f75284.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSC04537" />

<img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5017/550 ... 933ffc.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSC04540" />

Used this soil (palm aggregate mix is too "deserty"), but it looks like it has too much peat, so added extra extra perlite for faster drainage.

<img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5215/550 ... 64fb0b.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSC04538" />

Now, the big Q: Will they survive?
I know...I know...an easy question. :lol:

Supposed to look like this!

Thanks for looking at my mess.

Barb, it sounds to me like you have done everything correctly. The only thing I would recommend now would be a root drench with an all-purpose fungicide. Daconil is best if you can find it. Home Depot still carries it here.
