New Growth

With spring not too far away, starting to see things wake up !

A couple Cycas sp. 'Wilailak' ,

I snuck these Ceratozamias in during a warm spell last month and wrapped the containers with Christmas lights to keep them warm.

These should fill out nicely 8)

Cycas sp. 'Wilailak' frond,

At this size, mine are growing fronds to about a 3' length, and do seem to prefer a shady spot.

Jody,

I'm fairly sure it is one of the robusta types, hoping you can help me ID it once some leaves are up :D

Great pics, Steve, especially the close-ups.

Nice response for so early in the season.
I'm guessing your D.spinulosum will have leaves that beat the 3-foot mark.
Mine is putting my other cycads to shame including D.edule.

Barb,

The edules may be slower, but I think they make up for it with color.
(mine still have a nice blue sheen 8)

Your Cycas debaoensis might end up outpacing them all! How are those doing?

True, nothing beats D.edule for color.

The C.debaoensis have stopped again due to dark/overcast weather, despite warm temps in house.

The two C.debaoensis in 2-gallon pots look further along, so I'll pot the others into 2-gallon pots soon.
My one remaining C. panzhihuaensis shows no signs of pushing a leaf.

I'm going to hold off fertilizing for another 2 weeks.
We need more than the odd sunny break to kick plants into growth.

Barb, I've been waiting since last April for this Lepidozamia to put up it's first frond!
(I'm hoping, maybe this year

(just finding ways to pass the time)

With the Lepidozamia, had 3-4 that germinated. One has sent up two fronds already, and the rest look like the photo. Even dug one up last week just to make sure it was still alive, so the wait goes on............. :D

Since I moved everything out to the Greenhouse (was in basement) I have not lost ONE THING. Next year I am not moving anything inside, keeping it all in the greenhouse. Even thou the air temps get cold at night (around high 30's to low 40's if I had to guess) the soil temps are VERY warm. Warm enough that when I water, the run off water is HOT coming out the bottom. So everythjing is not dying, and IS growing, just at a snails pace.
As far as new growth on Cycads, My Rumphii leaf is still stretching and will be a BIG BEAUTIFUL leaf when it opens. I have 4 Tait X Guiz seedlings and 3 are finishing there leaf, while the other is just starting one. The Tait X Panzi seedling MIGHT be trying to start something, but the Tait X Guiz are WAY faster growers.
I have a Merolae (Golden Leaf) seedling (Ping Pong Ball size) that I cut the leaf off of about 2 months ago and thought it might be dead, but it is getting really fuzzy so we might be back in buisness.
I have a Wilailik that put out a two leaf flush that was BIG, but when I put it out in the garage for the gradual sunlight from basement to greenhouse transition, SOMEBODY KNOCKED THE LEAFLETS OFF THE STEM, so I had to cut that flush.
Other than that, not much.
On the Palms side, palms that have done great so far are the X-Mas palms you gave me a year or so ago. I have one that is starting it's first split leaf. Surprising enough my Spindle sappling, Foxtail Sappling, Royal Sappling and Foxtail Seedling are all doing GREAT. I thought I might have trouble with them in the 30's to 40's, but man, they are growing STRONG. I have found that keeping my Sabal Minors in standing water has caused them to double their size over the Winter. I thought that since many of these are in swamps, that the standing water wouldn't hurt them and sure enough they are growing like mad. Butia's are doing good, and the Bismarkia that you gave me last Fall is doing GREAT, I mean REALLY GREAT. It is on it's third leaf since you gave me it.

Sounds like you had a good winter.
My Palms didn't do that well :|
I'm waiting to see if the robusta in the yard survived, think I told you something tore the poly up the night it was -7*F out?
(Even lost the Sabal minors in there, so it had to be cold.....................

The Cycads held all their fronds through the winter, these "'Wilailak" are holding about ten each, not sure if there's room for any more to grow :D

I just noticed something Steve. You cut your last flush off (or from shipping). I think I will try that with mine. Works on everything else, so it should work for this.

Wes, The fronds were cut for shipping. Trimming the fronds can induce a new flush, but it's also going to use up energy the plant has stored. With mine, I'm trying to keep as many fronds as possible, seems to speed up overall growth.

Heat does a good job of inducing flushes too, I wrapped the Ceratozamia containers with Christmas lights as soon as I settled them in. Took about a month for the first one to start up.

Good results so early, Steve.

It'll be nice to see them fill out this summer.
Should be good sizes.

Mine aren't doing much of anything.
Little sun, even less heat.

Sorry, but what with 70's & 80's temps, I think the ground is too warm to support any accumulation, especially if it rains alot first which is what they are saying.

I will take some pics today as I worked last night and have spare time (baby is at babysetter).

Yes, I now also realize how warmth-dependent cycads seem to be.

Sunny days and they move along rapidly.
A cooldown and they take a break.

Your hanging planters provide the most heat near the ceiling.
They're doing very well.

Hi Barb,
Having some larger Cycads is nice, but I still have the most fun starting them from seed 8)

The D. Spinulosum is doing well, put out 3 leaves last year, (That was after I dug it up and moved it twice)
Seems to have rooted in well over the winter, should be a good season for it!

Glad the D.spinulosum is doing well; it'll blow your socks off this year.
I was amazed at how much it grew the first year I received it from Lori at Jurassic Plants Nursery.

Your stuff looks good, nice to see the flush and good colour.

My two sagos are now outside, and they're starting to look like they're awake.
Finally.

GREAT NEWS!!!
Steve, remember when I was asking about Ceratozamia Robusta and mine not doing anything? Well, I looked and I see that something is happening. I can not see green leafs yet, but I can see a swelling and seperating going on...YAAAAAA!
Also, my big Wilailik is flushing (too small to take pics) along with 2 of my Tait X Guiz seedlings. I think my Dioon Jacala & Encephalartos Ferox are getting ready as well. Hopefully in two weeks I'll have pics.

BTW Steve, your Spinulosum looks GREAT!! I think those are my favorite Dioons.

Steve,
Those D.spinulosum leaves are so lovely and long.
This year they'll likely be even longer, becoming very graceful looking with arching fronds.

Wes,
We'll look forward to those pics.
