BRRRR! deep freeze

Post by lucky1 » Tue Dec 03, 2013 6:24 am

BRUTAL COLD, with only an inch of snow on the ground.

Barely into winter and we've already seen...felt...2 arctic blasts.

Our normal High/Low = 3C and -5C.
Last year = 7C and -1C

Today it's -8C and -17C :lickice:

And still getting colder.

Global warming where the hell are you? :?
(whine, whine, sniff sniff)

Barb

EDIT: Windchill -25C -13F

My big potted Yucca rostrata is outside, albeit under cover and snugged up against a window. Dry. How cold before it will have a problem in a pot? The lowest forecast for the next few days is -14 oC at the nearest airport; should be warmer here in town plus up against (single pane) window.

Sheesh... -24C  I hope it don't get that cold Barb. That's still pretty early in the season for that. I'd hate to think what temps would be experienced at higher altitudes.

Yup Andy that's the f/cast for end of this week.
Absolutely brutal cold with strong winds.

Somebody said this is "as cold as 1985"...whatever that was like.
I must've had more beer that year.
Don't remember it.

Check this out Barb...from the forecasters discussion here.

NEXT MONDAY AND TUESDAY...THE LONGER RANGE SIGNALS SUGGEST THAT
AFTER WHAT KIND OF SYSTEM CAN MAKE IT THROUGH OR CLOSE TO THE AREA
SUNDAY INTO EARLY MONDAY...A VERY COLD AIRMASS THEN LOOMS ACRS
CANADA. THE FRESHLY PHASED L/W TROF WILL THEN BECOME COLD CORE AND
ACT AS AN ARCTIC CONDUIT ALLOWING A COLD DUMP DOWN THE NORTHERN
PLAINS AND UPPER MIDWEST LATER MONDAY INTO TUE. THE 12Z GFS HAS A
FRIGID H85 MB COLD POOL OF -20 TO -26C BARRELING IT/S WAY DOWN
ACRS MOST OF THE CWA BY 12Z TUE...THE 12Z ECMWF IS ADVERTISING -19 TO
-21C. EVEN WITH MIXING WINDS WHICH WILL BE BRISK IN THIS TYPE OF
CAA UNDER CYCLONIC FLOW...TEMPS BY TUE MORNING MAY GO SUB-ZERO. MAY
BE WIND CHILL ADVISORY CRITERIA ATTAINED IN PORTIONS OF THE AREA LATE
MON NIGHT AND THROUGH MIDDAY TUE. WELL AGAIN...MANY SYSTEMS AND
PHASING PROCESSES TO GO THROUGH TO GET TO THIS EXTENDED PERIOD BUT
WILL START TO TREND TEMPS DOWN. ..12..

Jay, Barb, Aaron sorry for this cold. Jim, take care, yours in it's way!
By the way you, NorthAmericans, have pretty mild winters comparing mine. So everything is gonna be alright!

Horrible in terms of cold duration. Temperatures were not so bad as winter 2011/2012.

Yeah, what's with that weather sticker?
If it were here, the pointer would have disintegrated.

Still getting colder here but the Prairies are taking the worst hit.

Each year I supply friends with evergreen tree branches and pine cones for Christmas decorating.
I love hiking around and collecting that stuff.
The dog even hauls branches down the hill, it's fun.

An electric blanket coat with a 500 foot extension cord may be needed this time.

And it's the SECOND arctic blast...we hit -19 with the first one in November.

Gloves stuck to the gate this morning when letting the dog out. :lickice:

Right now the Arctic air and pale sunlight are battling to keep it near 20F :verycold:

They say snow Sunday with a fresh Arctic dump behind it...good time to observe to
difference in low/high temps with bare ground and then with snow with similar air masses.

BUT that is about it!

To see the monumental size of this Arctic plunge, see the second graphic here:

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-b ... t/20652508

difference in low/high temps with bare ground and then with snow with similar air masses
The damage to planted yuccas, etc. may be pretty severe around here by the time significant snowfalls arrive.

I hope this weather misses the east coast. It is this kind of set up that is the hardest on plants "spring like temps followed by an arctic blast".

I have been so lucky this winter so far we've had some cold -16c was the worst but we haven't had more than 1/2" of snow yet. An hour west of me right now has 3 feet of snow. Yesterday got up to 14c I was so happy at that I enjoyed a frosty beverage on the deck in celebration. The past few Decembers have been pretty good to me but Jan/Feb more than make up for it. (Especially Feb) The past few years I have drove from my parents to my in laws on Xmas day with the sun roof open its been 5c+ the last few Dec 25th's

Ditto what Aaron said.
Almost all of North America hit with this jet stream drop.
I've never seen it dip that far south.

Sheesh...and the worst tidal surge in 60 years hit Britain.

Vancouver BC just announced this is their lowest temps in 687 days!

Anybody know if the typhoon that hit the Philippines last month made this North American cold worse than normal?

I've got some firewood Al Gore can help me haul into the house....

Those of you who are still warm, enjoy.
Everybody else, stay safe.

Looks like the Omega block moved from Siberia to your side, guys! It's funny but the Siberian cities 2 000 kms north off me have the temperatures above zero while I had minus 11C this morning. What's a heck?
