Late winter walk
A few pics to celebrate sun and disappearing snow.
Wildlife has been busy this winter:
Vole/mice tunnels, as though snow-killed grass isn't enough:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8514004734/" title="010 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8090/8514 ... 8b69_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="010"></a>
Squirrel caches all over the place, always on N side of trees:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512910977/" title="005 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8507/8512 ... 48e9_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="005"></a>
eeeeuw, box elder bugs tanning:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8514009574/" title="023 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8236/8514 ... 782d_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="023"></a>
Lots of evergreen needle litter from winter storms:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512893357/" title="001 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8252/8512 ... 8fdc_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="001"></a>
Free fertilizer everywhere, but I'll spare you the piles of dog poop.
goose poop:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512913679/" title="016 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8522/8512 ... d216_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="016"></a>
deer poop:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512919873/" title="019 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8380/8512 ... f742_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="019"></a>
Wildlife always bring Opuntia pads off the hills:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512918491/" title="018 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8097/8512 ... 9442_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="018"></a>
Little pond free of ice, complete with dead plants from last year:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8514009708/" title="011 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8091/8514 ... 8c65_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="011"></a>
Big pond starting to thaw:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8514026452/" title="017 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8386/8514 ... 38ba_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="017"></a>
Plants in the cold building aren't getting much light with a higher sun, will need to be outside soon:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8514015422/" title="012 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8091/8514 ... 234a_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="012"></a>
Pomegranate buds swelling:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8514018026/" title="013 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8508/8514 ... 97b6_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="013"></a>
The dog must've knocked over this Adenium obesum it's toast:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512902255/" title="014 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8251/8512 ... 986f_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="014"></a>
Y.rostratas are now enjoying the warm-up:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512905357/" title="007 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8528/8512 ... 23eb_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="007"></a>
A peek inside the vent of one of the Washy tents shows Rip Van Winkle variety:
That's the new spear coming...after 4 months maybe he needs to shave.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8514032930/" title="021 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8371/8514 ... 5a53_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="021"></a>
Found a spot behind trees where there's still enough snow to cool off:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8514031160/" title="020 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8372/8514 ... 5907_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="020"></a>
Have some plans this year...first, to get rid of this awful juniper and maybe plant the little T.tesan and a T.princeps instead:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512917179/" title="003 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8379/8512 ... 5085_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="003"></a>
Also plan to tear out this juniper in H's "gravel area"...might be a good place for C.humilis, Nannorrhops arabica, and two potted yuccas:
No easy task, as H always puts landscape fabric under the gravel...a real pain if you want to plant anything.
Wonder if he'll notice (ahem).
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512902319/" title="008 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8244/8512 ... 007a_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="008"></a>
Star Magnolia buds swelling:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8512908317/" title="006 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8518/8512 ... d6b4_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="006"></a>
Spring...ah come on!!!!!

Holy cow! Barb, your weather this year is nice and warm! Thanks for sharing with!
I have about 1 m of snow in my garden. It will be melting until the end of March... Crazy winter left behind anyway.

There are benefits though.1 m of snow in my garden.
I bet you don't have water restrictions in summer, Igor.
Or have to pay through the nose for every drop of water from the tap.
It's spring in your greenhouse!
Hope you have no snow soon.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Hi Barb,
did you notice any plant damage from the voles? I hate when I see those tunnels in the snow.

No, there's only a few junipers adjacent, and I don't care what they do to thoseany plant damage from the voles
Thank goodness voles don't like walking across concrete into potted plants.
Ours was -17C 1F during those 2 nights. What was your coldest temp thus far? We got down to -12c 10f here in Kelowna a couple nights.
Incredible that you're so much warmer and only 35 miles south.
Your stuff must have done great this winter, John.
Look forward to seeing some pics SOON
Spring's finally arrived (for now).
But sunshine is still at a premium.
The Robins are back and fighting for nest spaces woke me up this morning.
Most of my potted stuff is going out on the patio under the roof today.
Chiropractor...see you soon!
