Careful what you wish for Paul, I might grant your wish LOL

Up here, has been relatively the same so far. The lows are above average, and the drops have only gone to average. December was 4C warmer here then average.

At least you have snow down there. I have NONE. 10C yesterday, and we havnt had any precip since beore christmas. That was barley 2 cm. Ill send you cold, if you send me snow.

Even with all the cold air/snow around in December we still averaged 40F...

mostly because it was so warm the first 18 days or so-about +4F High/low for the month.

Last winter was so warm-we averaged at least 40F in every winter month with no sub-zero weather.

On our way again this winter but I have a feeling we won't get there this month as a blocking pattern
may be setting up to keep us in more typical winter cold-better now then in March/April!
Let's get it out of the way-not to much further to go now anyway.

Barb, seems you've got some winter cold... Are your palms OK there.
Aaron, Bisbee is in troubles too. Hope all those nice agave and yucca plants as well as cacti will survive this cold blast.

I noticed Mt. Lemmon in Tucson, Arizona is cold this week........tonight low of 7F with 3 days in a row of highs in 20's. This is Yucca schottii country.

Big Trachy in the hut is fine, thermocube's keeping it at about 0C.
Two Washies in leaf bags are probably OK.

But worried about y.rostratas as they just have a plastic cover.
And the thermocube that controls THEIR C-9s is in the Washy protection.
I was stupid to put thermocube where it's the warmest!
Had no idea how well those leaf-filled bags would keep it warm.

Quite the test for the rostratas in year 2 outside... :?

And, yes, Arizona's getting cold nights...
How sad this system is going so far south.

We currently have a low of -16C forecast for next Tuesday (Jan 22nd). If this pans out it will be the coldest we've seen since January 2011 when we hit -18.5C. Coldest so far this year is -7.6C, last years extreme low was -14C.

We have been so far below our avg of
High 33F
Low 18F

We have been like
High 10/14F
Low -5/2F

And for week after week! Every week they move the 32F day farther in the forcast. :x

And for week after week!
That's the peculiar part, Aaron.
The cold just hasn't let go for you.

Forecasters have been way wrong everywhere...our forecasted warm up of 48F for Tuesday bombed.
We made it all the way to a High of 24F.
Those guys must be smoking something weird.

Another mild winter here. Funny that after I gave up on palms in the ground ("colder-than-the-south-pole"in 2011), we are in store for a 2nd consecutive zone 8 winter. Not that I'm complaining. Not that I haven't given up on moving further south, either.

Have fun in Cabo, Beny...don't forget new batteries for your camera.
Lots of Washy pics please.

Your palms are well protected, so you can vacation in peace.

Nice! Would be a good place for seed! From looking at the weather maps everyday for the past weeks, looks like some of their range in the Chiricahuas have been below 0F.

When's the next time your going to see you brother in Tucson? It would be cool if we could go for a day hike looking for seed. I'm hoping to be there sometime in May.

All the weather models point towards towards this cold lasting into mid February with small mild interludes. Winters are getting colder here but then I am 52N

sounds great...........are there any high elevation valleys which might pool cold air............like a frost hollow? Start looking at the bottom and walk up the sides to find the Yuccas growing closest to the bottom.........these may be hardier than the ones near the peak since cold air does not 'pool' at the peak.

This is how the hardiest Eucalyptus's are collected.

Exactly! Just because they are found at higher elevations does not mean more cold hardy. Cold does not pool on mountain tops and sides.
I will see what I can find Tim. Most of the problem with getting seeds from Y. schottii is I can never find any with seeds. I hope this trip will be better. :D

I think this year I'm going to get some seed off the trunking baccata's if they are baccata.

I was at the limit of the sea of Cortez and Pacific ocean. Yes i was able to swim, small waves and sea temp. of 72-75F, a little colder. The pools at the Hotel Riu Santa Fe was heated at around 80F. I did surf on the Pacific side and the water was a bit colder, around 70-72F i guess.
Very nice Hotel, a lot of American like you from the middle west....

Hey Beny, thanks for the great photos.

Those two yucca to your left behind you in last photo... :D in front of the towering cactus...
And the 10 foot cactus up against the building is a fine specimen.

Beautiful landscaping; done with taste.
Agree that the combination of Phoenix and Washingtonia is a nice one.
And the agaves provide great color combination.

-18C is a good test for many plants. I hope all is well. 8)

I won't be removing any protection yet.........forecasts change fast. A nice dump of snow is coming our way.

The snow amounts on the map are in inches not cm. I was in the 10-14 inch (25-35cm) area...now 18"-24". Troy is in the 18-24 inch (45-61cm) area.

We'll see what happens..........it seems kinda early to be predicting snowfall amounts.............most likely it will change.

We are a little behind regarding 'average' snowfall. We stand at 18.0 inches (45.7 cm) the 'normal' amount for today would be 21.1 inches (53.6 cm) so this storm will push us ahead of 'normal'.........if it comes. :?

Barb,
Its a Agave, the one they make Tequila with...they planted a lot at this hotel, and we saw many along the principal highway from San jose Del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Very nice place to live, mexican people are so nice.
